The British driver told The Telegraph: “It is something I haven’t actually said publicly, but the deal is, if I’m performing (next year), we have a specific clause that if I reach [a certain target], we will automatically renew for 2027. So my seat for 2027 is in my hands. If I perform, then 100 per cent I’ll be staying.”

That shift places power in Russell’s hands rather than with team principal Toto Wolff, a significant change given Mercedes’ previous tendency to offer “1 + 1” contracts, where the extension option lay with the team.

The clause arrives at a crucial time in the Formula 1 driver market. Speculation has been rife that Mercedes could at some point pursue Max Verstappen, who reportedly held talks earlier this year, raising questions about Russell’s long-term place. By locking in his future via performance criteria, Russell has substantially strengthened his position.

His timing also reflected strong on-track form: with five wins and six further podiums after 20 of the 24 events this season, Russell sat fourth in the drivers’ standings while commanding a significantly enhanced bargaining position during negotiations.

Russell added: “I actually wanted to sign the deal back in October 2024 but the deal I got today is substantially better than what I would have got had I signed it then. So yeah, sometimes I think you just have to trust in your ability and I feel I’m only getting stronger.”

In short: Mercedes have secured their driver for the foreseeable future, but it is Russell who holds the key. Should he deliver the required targets in 2026, his seat is locked for 2027, a strong signal of intent from both driver and team ahead of the sport’s next phase.
