Borussia Dortmund overcame a sluggish start to earn a hard-fought 4-2 victory over FP Copenhagen at Parken Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Black and Yellows struck first with a moment of real quality. After neat build-up play found Nmecha on the edge of the box, the midfielder displayed fine technique to evade Elias Achouri before firing into the roof of the net.
Dortmund had a chance to double their lead through Maximilian Beier, but were punished moments later in bizarre fashion. Ramy Bensebaini’s attempted clearance, following a save from Gregor Kobel to deny former Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko, ricocheted off teammate Waldemar Anton and into the net for an own goal.
Junnosuke Suzuki came close to giving the hosts the lead, dragging his shot narrowly wide, with the Danes deserving their parity at halftime. Buoyed by that slice of fortune, Copenhagen ended the first half on top despite the scores being level.
Although Dortmund still weren’t at their fluent best in the second stanza, Copenhagen failed to capitalise on their momentum and were made to pay. On the hour mark, Lukas Lerager conceded a penalty for tugging Serhou Guirassy’s shirt, and Bensebaini confidently converted from the spot to restore the visitors’ advantage.
Having weathered the hosts’ pressure, Dortmund took control in the closing stages. Nmecha netted his second of the evening before substitute Fabio Silva added a fourth to seal a comfortable win for Niko Kovac’s side. Viktor Dadason pulled one back in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late, as Dortmund extended their unbeaten Champions League start.
