Howe revealed on Friday morning that Wissa, who joined Newcastle in the summer, is still suffering from a knock picked up while playing for DR Congo in their 1-0 defeat to Senegal earlier this week.
“Unfortunately he won’t make this game. I saw him for the first time yesterday and he’s feeling the effects of the injury sustained just before he came off on international duty. We’re going to have to see how he is,” Howe said.
Ramsey is facing a longer spell on the sidelines after injuring his ankle against Leeds before the international break. The 23-year-old midfielder has been a regular under Howe but is not expected back until after the next round of internationals in October. “Jacob is our only other injury concern and he’ll miss the game. His ankle swelled up at half-time against Leeds and he had to come off. Unfortunately I think he’ll be missing until the next international break, so that’s a big blow,” Howe added.
There was better news for Newcastle supporters as Nick Woltemade, who arrived for sixty-nine million pounds from Werder Bremen in the summer, is available after training strongly on his return from duty with Germany.
Joelinton is also back in contention after missing Brazil’s fixtures but has trained throughout the week. “Joe has trained. He’s been fit and available, he’s been out on the training pitch and is looking good. Really happy to welcome him back, such an important player,” Howe said.
The injuries come at a difficult time, with Newcastle facing a demanding schedule. After Wolves, they travel to Barcelona in the Champions League before taking on Bournemouth in the league. Howe will need his squad depth as the Magpies battle across domestic and European fronts.
