The Brazilian, who joined United from Wolves in the summer for a reported sixty-two and a half million pounds, has been one of the side’s more energetic performers in an otherwise inconsistent start to the season.
Still searching for his first goal in red, Cunha’s impact has nevertheless been clear, with manager Ruben Amorim praising his competitive edge and influence in the dressing room.
Cunha was forced off in the first half at Old Trafford with a hamstring problem, sparking immediate concern with United already battling injury setbacks. He was later seen walking unaided, and his own message on social media suggested the problem may not be as severe as feared.
“What an incredible environment, it’s great to be here. I’ll be back soon, always with joy and gratitude. Thanks for all the messages,” Cunha wrote after withdrawing from Brazil’s latest squad.
Amorim admitted after the Burnley victory that the situation was troubling, with Mason Mount also carrying a knock. “It was hard to lose a player like Cunha and Mason Mount, Mount played like 30 minutes with an injury. I don’t know if they are long-term injuries, I don’t know, but I’m concerned about that. They are so important for us, so we’ll see,” the United boss said.
United’s focus now turns to the Manchester derby at the Etihad on September 14, where they face a City side who, despite an uneven start, remain strong on home turf. United, sitting on just four points from their opening nine league games, will need as close to a full squad as possible if they are to cause an upset.
Amorim has already highlighted how vital Cunha’s personality has been since his arrival. “He’s a loud guy that’s really important in this moment. When he’s upset, you can feel it in the environment and that’s good. He has some characteristics that we missed last season, so I’m really happy with him and the other guys,” Amorim said.
The Portuguese coach’s hope now is that Cunha’s return will come sooner rather than later, with United needing every option available as they prepare for one of the most important fixtures of their campaign.
