Manchester City are on the verge of the transfer for Paris Saint-Germain’s star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian international, widely regarded as one of the world’s elite shot-stoppers, is poised to join the Premier League giants as they look to bolster their goalkeeping ranks.
Paris Saint-Germain have decided to part ways with Donnarumma, whose contract runs until June 2026, after failing to agree on a new deal. The 26-year-old, instrumental in their Champions League and quadruple success last season, expressed disappointment over PSG’s contract offer. “Gigio is very disappointed, I’m shocked,” his agent Enzo Raiola said, criticising PSG’s handling of the situation.
PSG have already moved on, signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille for 40 million euros as Donnarumma’s replacement, leaving the Italy No. 1 free to explore new opportunities.
Manchester City have seized the moment, with talks progressing swiftly. Sources close to the club confirmed they are confident of landing Donnarumma for a bargain fee of around 30 million pounds, well below PSG’s initial 50 million euro asking price.
“Manchester City have started discussions with the entourage of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is appreciated by Pep Guardiola,” a report from RMC Sport noted, adding that personal terms are unlikely to be an issue.
The transfer hinges on one final detail: the departure of City’s current goalkeeper, Ederson. Galatasaray are pushing hard to sign the Brazilian, though their 10 million euro bid was rejected, with City holding out for closer to 25 million euros. Ederson’s potential exit would pave the way for Donnarumma to take over as City’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already strengthened their goalkeeping department this summer, re-signing James Trafford from Burnley and adding Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea. However, Donnarumma’s availability represents a rare chance to secure a world-class talent. “He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world, no doubt,” PSG manager Luis Enrique said, acknowledging Donnarumma’s quality despite the club’s decision to seek a different profile.
Not everyone is convinced Donnarumma is the perfect fit for City. PSG expert Julien Laurens questioned his suitability for Guardiola’s system, stating, “He is not a Pep type of keeper… not great on the ball, which you need to play for Pep.”
Despite such reservations, City’s interest remains strong, with La Stampa reporting that Donnarumma will earn around 12 million euros annually, equivalent to 200,000 pounds per week.
Manchester United had explored a move for Donnarumma to replace Andre Onana but have since stepped back, leaving City as the frontrunners. The potential signing could spell trouble for Trafford, whose hopes of becoming City’s No. 1 would take a significant hit with Donnarumma’s arrival.
As the transfer window nears its close, City are moving decisively to finalise the deal, aiming to add Donnarumma’s commanding presence and shot-stopping prowess to their squad.
With negotiations described as “imminent,” fans are eagerly awaiting confirmation of what could be one of the summer’s most significant transfers.
