Mikel Arteta has praised 15-year-old Max Dowman after the teenage winger made a lively impression during Arsenal’s 1–0 preseason win over AC Milan.
Dowman was one of two 15-year-olds handed a senior debut in the match, alongside centre-back Marli Salmon. While both prospects showcased maturity beyond their years, it was Dowman who caught the eye with a dynamic cameo that nearly included a goal.
Speaking after the match, Arteta was full of praise for the club’s academy graduates.
“Yes, I’m very happy with all the kids,” Arteta said. “I think they are able to play at that level, at 15 years old, in my opinion, because of the environment and culture within the team. When somebody makes you feel comfortable and confident, you can go and do it.
“Of course, you still need the qualities-and this kid has them.”
Dowman’s assured display underlined why there is growing excitement about his long-term potential at the Emirates. A product of Hale End, the midfielder has already been earmarked as one of the most technically gifted players in his age group in England. But while his performance suggested he could be ready for more, Arteta stressed that physical development and consistency remain crucial.
“We don’t know (how many minutes he’ll get this season),” Arteta admitted. “With all the young kids, they’re in and around the team constantly, and they’re getting used to the dynamics and demands.
“To perform and impact the game at this level demands really high physical standards. They’re building that, and it gives them a platform-but then they’ll have to earn it.”
Arsenal have been proactive in integrating young talent into the first-team picture under Arteta, with Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, and Reuell Walters among those who’ve progressed from the academy to senior roles. Dowman’s emergence appears to follow in that tradition, though Arteta is taking a measured approach to his development.
For now, Dowman’s next steps will likely come in U18 and U21 fixtures, but his senior debut has sent a clear signal: another bright Hale End product is on the rise.
