Williams driver Alex Albon has voiced concern that the team may be “falling behind” in F1’s competitive midfield battle.
Albon’s remarks come amid a campaign that has seen Williams already triple their points haul from 2024.
The Grove-based outfit appeared to turn a corner with competitive showings in the opening half of the season, signalling a potential resurgence after years of underperformance.
However, as the season has progressed, Williams have encountered increasing difficulties. Chief among them is a persistent cooling issue in the car, which has led to race management problems and even a few retirements.
The technical flaw has hindered the team’s ability to capitalise on their early-season momentum and raised questions about development pace relative to midfield rivals.
At the recent British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Albon managed a ninth-place finish, earning two valuable points for the team.
While the result may seem modest, the car’s race pace was encouraging, hinting at untapped potential if reliability issues can be addressed.
Asked about the season so far, Albon said: “Strong start, strong middle.
“This is the first race I’ve finished in a while now. We finished and we scored points.
“We’re not in a bad place. We’ve just had a rough time of it. We’ll have more time to go through the data from this weekend.
“We’ve done a few tests in the car to see where this overheating problem is coming from.”
He added: “I see Sauber, I see Haas. They’re all getting quicker and quicker.
“They’ve put upgrades on their car. We’re now falling behind.”
