They can make you or break you, and Red Bull just proved it by announcing the dismissal of Team Principal Christian Horner after 20 years in charge. When asked about the reason for his sudden departure, Horner simply replied, “No reason was given to me.”
In a statement released by Red Bull, it reads, “With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.
“Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history.”
Management has already found a replacement for the 51-year-old with Laurent Mekies stepping in. Horner was the longest-serving team principal, having been in the position since Red Bull made its Formula One debut in 2005.
Under Horner’s leadership, Red Bull secured eight Drivers’ World Championships and six Constructors’ Championships.However, this season the team has faced challenges, currently sitting fourth in the constructors’ standings with 172 points.They are trailing the leaders, McLaren, by 288 points.
Horner’s position as team principal came under scrutiny following serious allegations of misconduct made by a female employee last year. The situation intensified when Max Verstappen’s father publicly called for Horner to step down amid the controversy.
The British team principal, strongly denied the allegations. An internal investigation was promptly launched, ultimately clearing him of any wrongdoing. Despite being cleared, the episode sparked a wider discussion about leadership and team dynamics within Red Bull.
The incident also put pressure on the team during a challenging season, as they try to rebuild momentum and restore confidence both on and off the track.
Rumor also has it that two key senior executives tied closely to Horner have also been shown the door at Red Bull, sparking whispers of a shake-up behind the scenes.
