Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car accident alongside his brother in Zamora, in the northwestern of Spain.

The 28-year-old was travelling with his brother Andre on the A-52 road which is a key route to northern Portugal.

In a statement released by the Emergency services in Castilla and Leon region who confirmed the accident reads

“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.

Jota joined Liverpool FC on September 19, 2020, from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He has played his heart out for the Reds, delivering exceptional performances in the 180 appearances he has made for the club. He recently won and lifted the Premier League trophy with Liverpool, adding to his FA Cup and Carabao Cup titles.

He proudly started playing for his country in November 2019, representing Portugal at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. He has also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League twice.

Jota recently married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, in Porto. He proposed to Rute back in July 2022 in a picturesque lakeside setting. The couple have three children together.
