An emotional Emma Raducanu cried her eyes out after defeating world No. 64 Ann Li 6-7 (5-7)6-3 6-1, a victory that marked more than just a scoreline, it was a release, a redemption, and a reminder of her undeniable talent.
Since the Lexus Eastbourne Open began, the 22-year-old has been battling persistent back pain. During her post-match interview at Queen’s Club, Raducanu discussed the injury she sustained after slipping and falling on the grass. She also added that she has been struggling with the issue since the tournament in Strasbourg.
“I have been struggling with my back since Strasbourg, and it’s just been something that’s been on and off,” said Raducanu.
“I have been managing it pretty well over the last few weeks, but I guess as the week goes on and I have played five matches now, even if two were doubles, I think it just tests it out. And I just felt it as the load goes up.
“They took me off court and taped it to give me some extra stability, and some painkillers.
“It has been lingering for the last few weeks, and I have had back issues before. It’s just a vulnerability of mine. I know I need to take good care of it.”
It seems Raducanu is now back in form, delivering some of her best performances on the court. Just a few months ago, she was searching for a coach, but she has since teamed up with Mark Petchey. The two have been working exceptionally well together, with Raducanu praising his guidance.
However, Petchey is also a full-time TV commentator, and committing fully to coaching Raducanu could jeopardize his broadcasting role, as helping her win major titles would require his full attention. The Tennis Channel has granted Petchey permission to coach Raducanu through Wimbledon.
Emma Raducanu’s next opponent will be 19-year-old Maya Joint. This will be the second meeting between the two young, talented players. They first faced each other at the Italian Open last month, where the former British No. 1 won a hard-fought match 7–5, 6–7(1), 6–3.
