EPSOM DOWNS
Race 2 BETFRED DIOMED STAKES (Group 3)
No9 ROYAL PLAYWRIGHT (Each Way)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Oisin Murphy
These easier underfoot conditions should assist ROYAL PLAYWRIGHT who is a son of soft ground stallion Lope De Vega. He almost certainly didn’t get the trip in the Dante but had previously earned in Listed company at Newcastle, while last year he was placed in a Group 3 and a Group 2. Three-year-olds don’t have the best record in this race named after the first Derby winner, but he can prove an exception to the rule under the champion jockey.
Race 3 No16 CAPE SOVEREIGN (Each Way)
Trainer: Kevin Ryan – Jockey: Hollie Doyle
The Dash will be run in the blink of an eye, but try to keep yours open for a late thrust from CAPE SOVEREIGN. Having troubled the judge without winning in each of his last six outings the selection will need luck in running. He was doing his best work at the finish at York last time and can again get into the shake-up. MADEMOISELLE has a good chance of turning round Goodwood form with RUBY’S PROFIT on revised terms while at a massive price locally-trained SANDSCREENDELIVERD could light up the board.
Prediction: 1st CAPE SOVEREIGN, 2nd Mademoiselle, 3rd Ruby’s Profit, 4th Sandscreendeliverd
Race 5 BETFRED DERBY (Group 1)
No13 RULING COURT (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
Justify produced the 2024 Premier Classic winner in City Of Troy and the same stallion can do it again with RULING COURT, whose 2,000 Guineas form is working out spectacularly well. While he may have been a shade lucky to beat Field Of Gold at Newmarket it is more than interesting that his trainer immediately nominated Epsom for him. He’s bread to get a mile and a quarter and has a great chance of getting the full Classic distance.
PRIDE OF ARRAS had THE LION IN WINTER behind him in the Dante Stakes at York, and while the New Bay colt was impressive his victory appeared to come as a surprise to his connections. Ralph Beckett also fields STANHOPE GARDENS, who got to within a neck of DELACROIX in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket last back end and after a minor setback landed a specially created race over a mile at Salisbury. On that evidence he is the dark horse in the race.
DELACROIX has impressed in both trials in Ireland and is Ryan Moore’s selected mount. The son of Frankel looks rock solid, while one to include in all permutations is MIDAK, unbeaten in three for Francis Graffard and sporting the famous colours of the late Aga Khan in the year the race is run in his honour.
Prediction: 1st RULING COURT, 2nd Delacroix, 3rd Pride Of Arras, 4th Midak, 5th Stanhope Gardens
Race 6 No6 CANDYMAN STAN (Each Way)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Jason Watson
CANDYMAN STAN has built up a good understanding with Watson and now seeks a fourth triumph from his last six outings. While this is a step up the class ladder, the selection looked to score with 0lenty 8n hand at Lingfield last month, whilst have proved he can handle a switchback course with his earlier Brighton success.
Race 7 No9 GRECIAN LEGACY (Each Way)
Trainer: Daniel Kubler – Jockey: Hollie Doyle
This is a closely balanced three-year-old only handicap in which GRECIAN LEGACY can prove the pick. He looked to have done well for his winter out when return8ng to score in snug style at Goodwood, and can back that up by getting the better of CHARTWELL JOCK, MEBLESH and WAR HAWK.
CHEPSTOW
Race 1 No4 JOY CHOI (Each Way)
Trainer: Malcolm Saunders – Jockey: William Carson
JOY CHOI has as she’s got older needs a couple of outings to bring her to the boil. The seven-year-old put in an improved run when making the podium in a blanket finish at this course last time and is now fully primed and can deliver.
Race 4 No6 REDREDROBIN (Each Way)
Trainer: Malcolm Saunders – Jockey: William Carson
From the same stable, REDREDROBIN looks overpriced. She didn’t enjoy the rub of the green on her latest start at Salisbury and now returns to her optimum trip, making her dangerous to dismiss.
Race 7 No6 DIAMOND COTTAGE ( Nap)
Trainer: Malcolm Saunders – Jockey: William Carson
DIAMOND COTTAGE did us a favour when landing an enormous gamble over this course and distance last time. She’s run some of her best races at Chepstow, and while carded to start favourite remains dangerous in receipt of all her opponents.
LINGFIELD PARK
Race 5 No4 PICKERING CASTLE (Nap)
Trainer: David Simcock – Jockey: Dylan Hogan
This is a tough card for punting but PICKERING CASTLE brings strong form to the table, and is the bet worth waiting for in the maiden. He troubled the judge in his last two of three starts last year, and is going to be in his element over this 1400 metres and on the eased ground.
DONCASTER
Race 5 No3 WAY OF STARS
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Callum Hutchinson
WAY OF STARS can give Balding a second success in this race in as many years. Although proving costly to follow, he’s hit the board in all five of his starts, gets the trip well and looks the type to do better in handicaps.
Race 6 No2 REMMOOZ (Nap)
Trainer: Owen Burrows – Jockey: K Stott
At a short price REMMOOZ should follow up his course and distance triumph from April and remain unbeaten. His trainer has targeted this race with d3cent tackle, and will have the Blue Point colt primed to put his best foot forward on the way to better things.
