The 36-year-old is among the top four batting greats in the world of cricket, alongside England’s Joe Root, Australia’s Steve Smith, and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson.

Having scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, Kohli has made his mark by playing in 123 Tests. He made his debut in Test cricket back in 2011 against the West Indies.

He worked his way up, showcasing his talent on the field, which secured him a role as captain, leading his country in 68 test matches.

Kohli announced his retirement, posting a statement on his Instagram account. He expressed how it was not an easy decision to make, but this decision feels right as he gets older, and he has no regrets. Looking back at his test career, it is all smiles.

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.

“There’s something deeply personal about playing in white. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever. As I step away from this format, it’s not easy, but it feels right.

“I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile.”

Rumor has it that the legendary batter had been planning his retirement since last year. he told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he wished to retire ahead of the summer series in England.

He also informed the Chief Selector of his decision in April to step away before the start of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle in June.

India is expected to make their squad selection for the England series by May 24, and since they are without a captain, it seems that decision will be made next week, as Gill and Pant are at the front line for the vacancy.

Shubman Gill made his test cricket debut in 2020 in Melbourne, where he scored 45 and 35 not out against Australia, and India won by eight wickets.

Test cricket is Rishabh Pant’s thing , it’s in his DNA as he has been playing the format since the age of six years old. He made his debut for his country in 2018, where he performed exceptionally well.
