This move comes as Tottenham, under the guidance of manager Ange Postecoglou, seeks to bolster its attacking options before the transfer window closes on February 3.
Spurs’ urgency for reinforcements in the forward line has been driven by a spate of injuries to key players such as Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, and Dominic Solanke.
Postecoglou has been vocal about the need for new talent, stating, “We are looking to enhance our squad with players who can make an immediate impact.”
Mathys Tel, who can operate effectively as both a striker and a winger, has become one of the most sought-after talents in the current transfer market. His decision to seek a move away from Bayern stems from his desire for more playing time, overshadowed as he has been by the formidable presence of Harry Kane.
Despite his limited appearances, Tel managed an impressive 16 goal contributions last season, highlighting his potential at just 19 years old.
Bayern Munich has been open to letting Tel leave, either on a loan or through a permanent transfer. Their valuation for a full sale matches the agreed figure with Tottenham.
However, Bayern’s preference leans towards a permanent solution, whether outright or with an obligation to buy, according to transfer insider Fraser Fletcher.
Two reputable French sources, Le Parisien and L’Equipe, confirmed the agreement. Le Parisien reported, “Spurs have reached an agreement in principle with Bayern for 60 million euros,” while L’Equipe echoed, “Bayern Munich and Tottenham have reached an agreement for the transfer of striker Mathys Tel for around 60 million euros.”
Despite the agreement between clubs, Tel’s transfer isn’t sealed yet. He is reportedly still considering his options, demanding assurances of regular first-team football from his next club.
Tottenham’s injury woes and the inconsistent performances from current forwards like Werner and Richarlison might play into their hands here, as they are prepared to offer Tel the playing time he seeks.
However, with interest from clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Aston Villa, plus other European teams, the deal is far from certain.
Manchester United, for instance, have only shown interest in a loan deal, which doesn’t align with Bayern’s strategy. An X update from
@Plettigoal mentioned, “Understand that Tottenham have started negotiations with FC Bayern over a move for Mathys Tel. Talks are also ongoing with other clubs.”
The race for Tel’s signature is heating up, and while Tottenham have made significant strides, they must act swiftly to finalize personal terms with the young French star before rival clubs attempt to hijack the deal.
The next few days will be crucial for Spurs to convert this agreement into a successful signing.
