Commonwealth Games United Kingdom Wrap 2022

2022 Commonwealth Games United Kingdom Wrap

England and Northern Ireland were exceptional in achieving their highest-ever Commonwealth Games medal tallies at Birmingham 2022, while Scotland and Wales also performed admirably.

The hosts once again finished as runners-up to the Australians, just as they did in 2018 on the Gold Coast, but did up their overall medal tally significantly from 136 to 176 in their record-breaking campaign. Team England secured 57 golds compared to their 45 four-years ago, as well as 66 silvers and 53 bronzes to the 45 and 46 they achieved in 2018 respectively.

Northern Ireland also surpassed their previous best performance at a Games; earning 18-medals this time round to better their previous best of 15 at Edinburgh in 1986. Their seven golds, seven silvers and four bronzes earned them a respectable finish of 11th; nine-places better than in 2018.

Scotland were the United Kingdom’s second-best performing nation, ending up sixth with 51 medals overall (13 gold) compared to a 2018 campaign that saw them finish eighth with 44. Memorably, 75-year-old George Miller became the oldest gold medallist in the history of the Games when she won the para-bowls mixed pairs title.

Wales, who finished seventh four-years ago, managed an eighth-place finish after collecting a total of 28 medals – eight less than they achieved on the Gold Coast – including eight golds.
