24/06/2022 – Friday’s Best Bets and Tips

Neil provides us with his best bets and tips for Friday’s race meetings at Doncaster, Yarmouth, Chester, Cartmel, Newcastle and Newmarket on 24/06/2022.

DONCASTER – 24/06/2022

Race 1 No6 AFTER JOHN (Each Way)
Trainer: Iain Jardine – Jockey: Jamie Gormley

AFTER JOHN can be a law unto himself, but in fairness to him his presence on the track has had a ring of consistency to it this year. After three near misses the gelding went backwards with cheek pieces added and it’s likely he will raise his game without that headgear.

Race 5 No3 LOVE YOU GRANDPA (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Jim Crowley

LOVE YOU GRANDPA shaped well when reappearing at Salisbury when it was thought she would benefit for the run. Her staying on effort needs to be improved on to win this, but after a pleasing gallop in Newmarket last week it’s possible it will.

YARMOUTH – 24/06/2022

Race 5 No2 COLOMBE (Nap)
Trainer: George Boughey – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark

COLOMBE has thrived since moving to Newmarket, scoring twice and hitting the board in four other races from a total of eight outings. Narrowly denied at Windsor last time, she can confirm her well being at the main expense of Grandfather Tom.

CHESTER – 24/06/2022

Race 2 No1 MYSTICAL APPLAUSE (Nap)
Trainer: Harry Eustace – Jockey: Hayley Turner

Aclaim colt MYSTICAL APPLAUSE hails from an ultra quick family and buckled down well to get the job done on her second start at Salisbury. She should prove equally happy stretching out to seven furlongs this evening, and can outpoint A dangerous looking newcomer in Mlle Chanel.

Race4 No6 TERRA MITICA
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa

Ulysses filly TERRA MITICA was a well supported favourite when opening her account at Chelmsford and has been given a nice gap before this first handicap assignment in which to strengthen up. Back on turf and getting weight from her foes, she should take all the beating.

CARTMEL – 24/06/2022

Race 2 No2 FREE HANDSHAKE (Nap)
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell – Jockey: Sean Flanagan

This looks bound for Ireland, with FREE HANDSHAKE just preferred to Gordon Elliott’s Ballyquin Bay. The selection has attracted support and especially so when fourth to Salvador Ziggy in a big field at Punchestown last month. It was his third earning run in succession and suggests he’s ready to open his account.

Race 6 No7 A MERE BAGATELLE
Trainer: Jonjo Hanlon – Jockey: Brian Hughes

Hughes is an eye taking booking for A MERE BAGATELLE, who after troubling the judge in a Flat race at Punchestown has earned in back-to-back visits in handicaps hurdles at Perth. That makes him the form pick, and his trainer means business with this likely market leader.

NEWCASTLE – 24/06/2022

Race 4 No3 MAKANAH (Each Way)
Trainer: Julie Camacho – Jockey: Paul Hanagan

A switch to the all-weather could make the difference to the consistent MAKAKAH, who has been denied in photos in recent races at York and Musselburgh. He didn’t show much on his only other start here, but that was back in 2019, and he’s worked well on a similar surface at home.

Race 5 JenningsBet Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3)
No7 POTAPOVA (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote

The feature sees Moon De Vega brought back in trip following a run in the Oaks that was better than her final placing indicates. She is worth a saver against POTAPOVA, whose tendency to lose ground leaving the stalls cosy her victory at Kempton and didn’t help when she was again second in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom. She has a good turn of foot and can mow down her opponents at the business end.

Race 7 No11 RAIN CAP (Each Way)
Trainer: John Riches – Jockey: Harry Russell

RAIN CAP was a dual scorer on turf last September and has shown with three earning efforts on the bounce that he’s getting close to another success. A line can be drawn through the names of several of his rivals, making him an attractive each way proposition at a big double figure price.

NEWMARKET – 24/06/2022

Race 7 No5 AEONIAN (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: William Buick

Buick is an eye catching booking AEONIAN, who needs to raise his game but can do. The Ulysses colt was caught out in a race run at a muddling pace when making his handicap debut at Lingfield. Back on turf this evening he can put his best foot forward as the best bet on a tricky card.
