PREVIEW: 2ND ODI – India v Australia

India secured the top ranking on the ICC’s ODI standings with a victory over Australia in the first match of the series.

Australia will target a big improvement when it comes to batting but otherwise should be happy with the outing.

India vs Australia | Second ODI | Sunday 24 September | Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore

India 3/4| Australia 21/20

India have done their bit to lift the mood ahead of the Cricket World Cup with a dominant win over Australia which saw prominent figures return to star.

Mohammed Shami proved to be the main man as he hamstrung the Aussie efforts with some fine fast bowling on a good pitch.

With Axar Patel in a race to be fit for the World Cup, Ravichandran Ashwin put in a good turn as he came back into the ODI fold and made his case for a late call-up.

India were able to put the Australian batters under pressure, even batting first and it shows that they will be tough to beat in the coming weeks.

Australia were struck by the Shami monster in the series opener but will be coming up with some plans to turn things around in the rest of the series.

None of their batters made the most of the starts they got, which will concern Australia and a rejigged batting order fell flat.

Australia could consider swapping Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green in the batting order but look likely to continue their allrounder heavy approach.

The Australian spinners couldn’t get on top of India with not enough runs on the board but it was a good outing for Matt Short and Adam Zampa.

Verdict: India

India should be able to wrap up the series in Indore on Sunday.
