They shared the spoils first up after a total washout prevented any play at all.

England vs Ireland | Second ODI | Saturday 23 September 2023 | Trent Bridge

England 1/8 | Ireland 5/1

England are headed to the World Cup without the members of this squad but there will be chances to impress for the future and to remain on standby for a call-up.

The white-ball team has tremendous top-order depth, and a few of these players have been waiting for just such an opportunity to impress.

Ben Duckett will be the man to front the England effort with form and experience on his side.

Teenaged spinner Rehan Ahmed is in line to play just his second ODI but has already been tagged as one to watch.

Ireland will be stewing on their failure to reach the Cricket World Cup as they prepare to face off with England.

The top-order transition has stalled, with Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling holding onto their places while younger talents are overlooked.

Ireland will need a big effort to overwhelm England at a ground that has been a very high-scoring one.

They will also need to be disciplined with the ball to avoid being hit to all parts.

Verdict: England

England should have too much firepower for Ireland.
