Thursday’s Best Bets and Tips- 25/08/2022

Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets for Thursday’s racing at Carlisle,  Chelmsford City, Ffos Las and Newcastle on 25/08/2022.

CARLISLE – 25/08/2022

Race 4 No9 BAREFOOT ANGEL (Nap)
Trainer: Richard Fahey – Jockey: Paul Hanagan

BAREFOOT ANGEL could hardly have better credentials for this novice stakes after an eye taking first offering at Ripon. The Dark Angel filly chased home Swingalong on that occasion, and her conqueror went on to floor stablemate Dramatised in the Group 2 Lowther at York. In colours that her trainer has enjoyed notable successes over the years, Barefoot Angel is napped.

Race 8 No2 GIBSIDE
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Duran Fentiman

GIBSIDE’s record in handicaps has yielded two wins and four places from eight attempts, and those successes were gained in dominating style. He’s especially effective at Ripon and just needs to show that on this first visit to Carlisle he relishes a stiff climb to the winning post.

CHELMSFORD CITY – 25/08/2022

Race 1 No6 CAERNARFON (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass

Channon has done well with one daughter of Cityscape in dual scorer Miss Attitude. Now it’s the turn of another, CAERNARFON, to put her best foot forward. She’s been easy to back on all three starts but taken home a cheque on each occasion, while it’s interesting connections are going for another novice when they could have targeted a nursery.

Race 4 No2 RHYTHM MASTER
Trainer: James Horton – Jockey: PJ McDonald

RHYTHM MASTER has had some uncomplimentary things said about him but the five-year-old showed on just a second start for his trainer that he’s enjoying a change of scenery. More to the point, he looked in that Newcastle contest to relish a late switch to the all-weather, and he’s the class act in this featured Chelmsford City Cup.

Race 5 No5 MORNING POST (Each Way)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore

Those in this maiden with public form have had a few chances, leaving the door ajar for a potential upset. This can arrive in the shape of Time Test gelding MORNING POST. The selection had shown ability at home before running a stinker on his Newbury introduction back in the spring. However, his trainer backed off him and gave him time to strengthen, a policy that can begin to reap dividends with an improved showing today.

FFOS LAS – 25/08/2022

Race 1 No5 KING’S GEM
Trainer: Sir Mark Todd – Jockey: Charles Bishop

Kingman colt KING’S GEM left behind an underwhelming first effort at Goodwood to take home a cheque at 40-1 in Magical Sunset’s race at Windsor and now should be fully primed to open his account. This well-related individual can land the spoils on the way to better things.

Race 4 No4 LADY EXCALIBUR (Each Way)
Trainer: Alan Jones – Jockey: Charles Bishop

Dual bumper winner LADY EXCALIBUR shaped well when tried on the Flat in a maiden here last month, giving hopes to connections that she can win soon. In order to do that she must take down a couple of strong opponents in Jahoori and Allemande, but at a much longer price than that pair she’s a value option to achieve it.

NEWCASTLE – 25/08/2022

Race 3 No13 GIVE IT SOME TEDDY (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: David Allan

GIVE IT SOME TEDDY reaches his peak at this time of the year, a point made when he was just worried out of it by Diamondonthehill at Redcar. He came there swinging off the bridle but although asserting when asked to win his race might have found himself in front a tad too soon. He looks sure to get a better all round pace in this bigger field, and can show on this fourth visit to Gosforth Park (he’s never run on sand anywhere else) that he’s ready to deliver.

Race 4 No6 HONKY TONK MAN (Nap)
Trainer: Roger Charlton – Jockey: Saffie Osborne

HONKY TONK MAN returned from a near 100-day break to trouble the judge at Lingfield to take his record on the all-weather to two from three. He was a cosy winner of a novice on his only previous visit to this course, and with only six career outings to his name has plenty of scope for progression, especially as his latest run could have been needed, and should bring him on.

Race 6 No5 MARSHAL DAN (Each Way)
Trainer: Heather Main – Jockey: Rowan Scott

This stable is excelling with its handicappers, adding weight to the claims for MARSHAL DAN to take home another sizeable cheque. The seven-year-old went 323 on his first three outings in 2022 only to have an off day when last of 14 at Doncaster. The faster conditions probably accounted for that eventuality, and now back on sand, on which he is inexperienced but effective, he can take down some shorter-priced rivals and justify his place as the value bet on this card.
