Neil Morrice shares all of his best bets and tips for Saturday's racing coming your way from Sandown Park, Beverley, Chester, Chelmsford City and Wolverhampton on 2 September 2023
SANDOWN PARK
Race 2 VIRGIN BET ATALANTA STAKES (Group 3)
No2 POTAPOVA
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Though proving something of an under achiever in just three starts this season, POTAPOVA can pack a punch and provide a boost to her stable that has been largely out of form. Her run behind Rogue Millenium in the Group 2 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot was better than it looked, and at a track that will suit she can use her turn of foot to good effect up the final hill.
Race 3 No1 CERTAIN LAD (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: George Bass
CERTAIN LAD looks like getting the cut in the ground he prefers and is worth a speculative bet in this Class2. A Group 2 winner, he is not as good as he was but after a sequence of disappointing runs has become reasonably handicapped. Bass gets the best out of the seven-year-old and I fancy the combination to claim a cheque.
Race 4 VIRGIN BET SOLARIO STAKES (Group 3)
No6 STARLORE (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Kingman colt STARLORE got home by the skin of his teeth at this course on debut, and has learned plenty from it. Stoute likes to run his best juveniles here, and Starlore is highly regarded at Freemason Lodge. He can preserve his unbeaten record at the main expense of Devil’s Point.
BEVERLEY
Race 2 No2 BOND CHAIRMAN
Trainer: Bryan Smart – Jockey: Harry Russell
BOND CHAIRMAN was never going at the Shergar Cup and a line should be drawn through that performance. The four-year-old is a real player in this Listed sprint if judged on a previous winning visit to Doncaster, and can bounce back.
Race 5 No6 FULL REGALIA (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Hills – Jockey: Ben Curtis
Ulysses filly FULL REGALIA looks to hold the cards in this maiden after her pleasing first run for Hills at Salisbury, where she found only Dreamrocker her superior. This well related individual can make full use of her sex allowance to open her account.
Race 6 No8 GIVE IT SOME TEDDY (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Duran Fentiman
Easterby has a great chance of bagging this, with veteran GIVE IT SOME TEDDY just preferred to Poet’s Dawn. The nine-year-old put in a seasonal best when second at Redcar last time to show he’s on the cusp of a return to the winner’s circle. He also has the jockey that gets the best out of him in the saddle.
CHESTER
Race 3 No9 PROFITABLE EDGE (Each Way)
Trainer: David Barron – Jockey: Jason Hart
PROFITABLE EDGE hails from a stable that excels with its sprinters. The filly has improved for a switch to Barron as demonstrated with her wide margin triumph in soft ground at Ripon. From her revised mark, and breaking from a draw her trainer would have picked, she should again get into the shake-up.
Race 4 No5 MILITARY ORDER
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
One time Derby favourite MILITARY ORDER can get his campaign back on track by taking out this Listed race and put himself in line for a possible tilt at the St Leger. The Frankel colt wasn’t able to reproduce his Lingfield Trial form in the Derby, but has been given plenty of time to recover from those exertions. Appleby’s horses have been mainly under a cloud but there are clear recent signs of improvement, and he can bolster that theory by thwarting his mainly older rivals.
Race 5 No1 JABAARA (Nap)
Trainer: Roger Varian – Jockey: David Egan
JABAARA travelled well for a long way in the Albany Stakes and was not disgraced when claiming a minor cheque in the Sweet Solera at Newmarket. The Exceed And Excel filly takes a class drop here, and though faced with a tough opponent in Great Generation should make no mistake.
Race 6 No7 ROMAN DRAGON (Each Way)
Trainer: Hugo Palmer – Jockey: David Probert
Course specialist ROMAN DRAGON looks to have everything right for a big earning effort in this competitive sprint. He has a plum draw two off the fence from which he can lead, and add to his three good efforts here through the summer which included a comfortable triumph two months ago. Should the ground soften it won’t bother him.
CHELMSFORD CITY
Race 2 No4 MAY
Trainer: Tom Clover – Jockey: Billy Loughnane
MAY is well drawn for this novice and has the added advantage of apprentice find of the season Loughnane in her irons. The Kodi Bear filly made a good impression when third on her debut at Windsor and should go a long way forward from that to get off the mark.
Race 6 No2 CLUB MANAGER (Nap)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Callum Hutchinson
CLUB MANAGER opened his account when landing some good bets at Kempton and now remains on Polytrack for his follow-up attempt. He is the most progressive in this three-year-old only contest, and can deliver in the colours of the great Mill Reef.
WOLVERHAMPTON
Race 2 No6 NEW CHELSEA (Nap)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rob Hornby
NEW CHELSEA troubled the judge in a hot maiden on his Newmarket introduction last month and has taken those exertions in his stride. He’s going to be more streetwise for this step up to a mile, and given the rub of the green will be hard to beat.
Race 7 No8 CHEESE THE ONE (Each Way)
Trainer: Stella Barclay – Jockey: Christian Howarth
CHEESE THE ONE meets My Opinion on worse terms than when holding that rival over this course and distance a fortnight ago, but the first-named horse can confirm his superiority. That was a sudden step in the right direction by the grey, who now has a ring of confidence to take to post.
