Neil Morrice shares his best bets and tips for Friday’s racing coming your way from Ascot, Haydock Park, Newcastle and Kempton Park on 8 September 2023.
ASCOT
Race 1 No1 CAJETAN (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: Charles Bishop
Channon will have one eye on the weather before giving CAJETAN the green light to run. The Advertise colt was all at sea on fast ground at Lingfield last time, a run that is best forgotten. He’s been doing everything right at home, but if getting scratched my attention is drawn to MISS INFORMATION who got going too late at Windsor and is a winner waiting to happen.
Race 2 No3 KESTREL (Nap)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Justify colt KESTREL is unleashed with good vibes from Coolmore but will need to be smart to repel the more experienced Olympic Candle. It’s not that often the master of Ballydoyle brings an unraced juvenile to an Ascot outside of the Riyal meeting, and the vibes I have for Kestrel suggest he could be smart.
Race 6 No2 AERION POWER
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore
AERION POWER has endured issues along the way and has to be trained with kid gloves. Stoute is winning the battle, judging by the Kingman entire’s excellent fourth in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot. Fresh from a mid-summer break he can with a first win of the season set himself up for further pickings through the autumn.
HAYDOCK PARK
Race 2 No2 RAQIYA
Trainer: Owen Burrows – Jockey: James Doyle
Blue Point filly RAQIYA looked a well above average juvenile when opening her account at Salisbury and has developed mentally in the month since that sterling effort. She has to give away 6lb to some likely types, including Lady Pagasa, but should be good enough to follow-up.
Race 3 No4 MUKER
Trainer: Nigel Tinkler – Jockey: Alex Jary
MUKER has posted two successes and a second since joining the Tinkler stable and is a horse with his tail up. Conditions should be ideal for the chestnut to keep up the good work on this first visit to Haydock in exactly a year.
Race 6 No1 RED MAIDS (Nap)
Trainer: Mark Rimell – Jockey: William Buick
RED MAIDS has the wherewithal to shrug aside top weight for her small stable under the same jockey that rode her to an impressive victory at Yarmouth. With various headgear that had been tried before dispensed with, the filly powered clear in the final furlong and can now defy her new mark.
Race 7 No8 DOUBLE OBAN
Trainer: Hugo Palmer – Jockey: Clifford Lee
DOUBLE OBAN doesn’t do anything in a hurry but is a good staying prospect for his trainer. His better form is on turf on which he broke his maiden at Leicester back in May. He’s earned in each of his three subsequent outings in handicaps, and can do so again.
NEWCASTLE
Race 3 No7 SIDNEY’S SON
Trainer: Nigel Tinkler – Jockey: Faye McManoman
Now that he’s finally put his head in front the floodgates could open for SIDNEY’S SON. He had to dig deep to make sure of a first career success at Carlisle, an effort that’s provided a confidence boost to the Dandy Man gelding, while his jockey has a very good record on him.
Race 6 No2 APOCALYX (Nap)
Trainer: Richard Fahey – Jockey: Billy Garritty
Calyx colt APOCALYX found only one to beat him on debut in a big field at Thirsk. Like many debutants from the Fahey stable, he should step up a fair way from that pleasing first offering, and he can prove more than a match for the only winner in the field Trefor.
KEMPTON PARK
Race 2 No9 KING OF LUCK
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
KING OF LUCK was easy to back and failed to menace on debut and now finds himself with a tricky outer draw to contend with. However, he’s well regarded at Freemason Lodge and has learned plenty for that first foray onto the track. The son of New Bay can up his game and give Fire Demon plenty to think about.
Race 3 No2 BEAUTY GENERATION (Nap)
Trainer: Marco Botti – Jockey: Morgan Cole
Ulysses colt BEAUTY GENERATION underwhelmed on his only start on turf only to bounce back with a decisive success at Chelmsford. He appreciated moving up to a mile for that, and kept to Polytrack can prevent the penalised Lambert from completing a hat-trick.
Race 4 No3 COPY ARTIST
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: David Probert
COPY ARTIST is on a recovery mission after a lifeless display at Haydock, but as she hated the heavy ground might be worth another chance returned to sand, on which she finished second on successive starts in January. Her second to Queen For You at Ascot in May would if repeated make her very hard to beat, but nevertheless, she comes with certain risks attached.
