Neil Morrice shares all of his best bets and tips for Thursday’s racing coming your way from Doncaster, Worcester, Newbury, Yarmouth and Sandown Park on 27 July 2023.
SANDOWN PARK
Race 1 No2 SERA DAWN (Nap)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: George Bass
Should rain arrive on Wednesday night it will be all in favour of SERA DAWN. The Bated Breath filly loves to get her toe into the ground and has looked on good terms with herself in her work ahead of this interesting opener..
Race 2 No1 ARABIAN CROWN
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
With the rail to assist him on his introduction round a left-handed bend, the beautifully-bred ARABIAN CROWN needs taking seriously. Though the older Godolphin horses have been generally out of sorts, the two-year-olds are starting to deliver as was the case with Wild Goddess last week. Arabian Crown is the subject of favourable reports from Newmarket.
Race 3 No5 GRAY’S INN (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: Thore Hammer Hansen
This represents a fair jump up the class ladder for GRAY’S INN, but one she can take in her stride. The iron grey has thrived in her short time at West Ilsley, and landed some good bets when taking out a Chester nursery in the soft. Cut in the ground would increase confidence in her gaining some black type in this Listed feature.
DONCASTER
Race 3 No6 MUSICAL ACT (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: James Doyle
MUSICAL ACT is another Appleby juvenile that needs a market check. He’s a well related individual who has been gelded ahead of a first run in which he meets five opponents that have already earned. He’s also opposed by stablemate Stormy Waves, who was green on his own introduction and needs respecting.
Race 4 No3 AL RASHAKA
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Jim Crowley
Frankel filly AL RASHAKA is out of the top class Rumoush and surfaces at a time when Gosden starts to unleash his backward types that have needed time. She’s a very well related individual, and could have too much for two previous winners to handle.
WORCESTER
Race 4 No6 SIX AND OUT (Nap)
Trainer: D Weston – Jockey: James Davies
On the first day of the final Ashes Test at The Oval, SIX AND OUT would be an appropriate winner of this maiden hurdle. The chestnut has finished second in all three outings in bumpers and if showing he’s a proficient jumper will go close to taking the spoils.
NEWBURY
Race 4 No5 TIN FANDANGO (Nap)
Trainer: Mark Usher – Jockey: Kaiya Fraser
TIN FANDANGO has been creeping closer to the winning post and was beaten in a tight finish at Chepstow earlier this month. That effort suggests the Steele Tango gelding is a winner waiting to happen, while he’s been apprentice ridden in each of his last four starts.
Race 5 No5 EXPERT WITNESS (Each Way)
Trainer: Sir Mark Todd – Jockey: George Rooke
For sheer value EXPERT WITNESS is a bet I’m looking forward to. The Expert Eye filly kept on gamely for a minor cheque at Leicester and tonight’s mile and a quarter trip is just what she wants. She’s been trained with a handicap campaign in mind, and needs respecting.
YARMOUTH
Race 1 No7 CHINESE KNOT (Nap)
Trainer: Rod Millman – Jockey: Saffie Osborne
At the most attractive meeting for betting, CHINESE KNOT is in a good place from which to open her account. She put in a career best when second at Windsor last week, has taken those exertions in her stride and looks ready to deliver.
Race 5 No9 DESPERATE HERO (Each Way)
Trainer: Jack Channon – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
Any cut in the ground will assist DESPERATE HERO who won easily in the soft at Windsor before running too quickly under a penalty at Goodwood. On his latest start at Haydock he was going best a furlong and a half out, but may have hit the front too soon as he weakened in the final 150 yards. It was still a pleasing run on ground quicker than ideal, and he can bounce back.
Race 6 No10 CARDANO (Each Way)
Trainer: Ben Brookhouse – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
With few miles on his racing clock over the past year, CARDANO is one to have a proper look at. He put in an eye taking run against Youthful King at Windsor on only a second start for his trainer, and has had a month to recover from it. He has the wherewithal to progress into an earning run and can repel the dangerous looking challenge of Alnilam.
Race 7 No2 EAGLE’S WAY (Each Way)
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Luke Morris
The nightcap is an absolute cracker in which EAGLE’S WAY can stretch his winning sequence to five. Unbeaten last season, he was a wide margin scorer on each occasion and looked a different horse to the one that was unplaced in three outings as a juvenile. He’s in the best hands to graduate further up the class ladder, and can take the spoils in a race where Certain Lad and Cumulonimbus are proper dangers and worth saving on.
