It could prove a turning point in a season which until then hadn’t worked out totally to plan.

Jamie now looks ahead to the weekend, where his movements take in the Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on Saturday, and the Southern National at Fontwell Park on Sunday.

The rider has fond memories of the ‘ Paddy Power’, generally considered the first major race of the National Hunt season, having partnered Baron Alco to win it in 2018.

Assessing his mount in the 2022 renewal, NASSALAM, he observes: “He spoiled his chance by jumping left at Ascot, which although he’d done before wasn’t expected, as he’d schooled straight a few days before and we thought he’d be all right.

“On Saturday he’s back on a left-handed track, but it’s good that he was as straight as you like when I schooled him again earlier this week.

“His owners won the Paddy Power with Baron Alco and are naturally keen to have a crack at it, but while it’s nice to be in the race again, he’s a 20-1 shot and I think that reflects his chance.”

Jamie will partner PERSEUS WAY on his debut over jumps in the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle, and he added: “He did ok on the Flat but has been slow coming to hand and fitting into the routine. It’s his first run over hurdles and part of a learning curve for him in his new discipline.”

In the Stirrups Restaurant And Cocktail Bar Evesham Mares’ Bumper he’s looking forward to teaming up with SYMPHORINE and continued: “She ran well on her debut at Fontwell and is a sweet filly who should give a good account.”

While the stable’s EDITEUR DU GITE tackles the Grade 2 Schloer Chase at Cheltenham on Sunday, Jamie will compete at Fontwell Park, where he feels he has good chances.

Summing up, he concludes: “If HANSARD runs in the novices’ hurdle he has a chance, as he ended last season on a winning note and is a nice horse that I like a lot. But he has a choice of engagements.

“AVILES finished fourth on his only start in France and is down to run in the juvenile hurdle where I think he has Milton Harris’s runner (Havaila) to beat.

“He jumps well and is not in any way flashy, and while two and a quarter miles stretches some three-year-olds, I think he will get the trip well.

“Then in the Southern National, I’m on the top weight FULL BACK who ran well to make the frame on his return at Ascot.

“He has a lot of weight to shoulder, but extreme distances suit him.”
