Now that Goodwood joins the ongoing Galway party, we are in for a few days of non-stop action.
Let’s take a look at some of today’s runners and riders to see can if we get some more winners on the board.
Glorious Goodwood Day 1| Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
Goodwood 15:00 – 7f World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) | Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
I find it hard to look past SACRED here.
She came back from a 308 day break to finish 5th in the 6f Group 1 Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot where she was doing all her best work late on.
Takes a drop in class here into a Group 2, and back up to 7f here which will be ideal for her.
The last time she was in Group 2 company over 7f she was an easy winner over Laneqash.
Sure to come on for her run at Royal Ascot, I find it hard to see her not winning here.
Goodwood 15:35 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) | Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
The swansong for Stradivarius, and as much as we would all love to see him go out on a high, I just can’t see it happening. Especially not with the new kid on the block (also my selection) in KYPRIOS.
Kyprios showed last time in the Ascot Gold Cup that he could have this division under lock and key for the next few seasons.
Admittedly, it was not the most impressive win you are likely to see, but the race was not run to suit and he still managed to pull it out of the fire and win.
I don’t see Ryan letting this being run at a crawl this time. If they do attempt to turn it into a sprint, expect to see Ryan take the bull by the horns and go to the front a long way out and use his proven stamina to gallop his rivals into submission.
Trueshan will always have the ground concerns over him, but at that I still think he will be found wanting.
If you forgive Princess Zoe her below par run in the Gold Cup then 18/1 looks a massive each way play here.
Galway Festival Day 2 | Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
Galway 17:40 – 2m2f Latin Quarter Beginners Chase | Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
An interesting beginners chase to get us stared with at Galway, and there is one lurking here that, if he gets back to his hurdles form from 2020, should take all the beating. That is the Willie Mullins-trained JON SNOW.
Jon Snow had some particularly good hurdles form before being hit with an injury that kept him out for 606 days.
He has an 8L win over Cheltenham Festival winner and Grade 1 winner Belfast Banter and a 35L win over multiple Grade 1 winner Skyace under his belt.
Last season saw the overdue return at Fairyhouse in April where he looked rusty and finished last of eight behind Darasso in a Grade 2 Hurdle.
Had a little break before a 1 ¼ length 2nd back on the level at Listowel.
Comes in here still with a bit to prove but, if his confidence is restored and the switch to fences does the trick, he should have too much class for the rest of his rivals.
Galway 18:40 – 1m½f (1m123y) COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap | Andrew Halligan 26/07/2022
The Premier Handicap is always a race that lives up to the bill with excitement and this year is no different.
In recent years Ado McGuinness has had a fine record in this race, and he comes into this renewal with an 8-pronged attack to keep that record going.
However, this year I think we might see Henry de Bromhead having a big say in this with my selection MOSALA.
Last year’s 3rd Mosala (off 93) was drawn 16 on that day, but now has been drawn nicely in 8 which is always a big plus on the flat in Galway. He has 3 ½ lengths to find on Sirjack Thomas on that running but there is a lot more in his favour today to be confident that he can turn that form around and getting the win, especially off a lower rating of 89.
Put in a great run when last seen behind Jungle Cove (2nd beat a head since), and ahead of Saltonstall (on worse terms now). This looks like it has been the plan and at 11/2, he will play a massive part in the finish.
