30/07/2022 – Saturday’s Best Bets and Tips

30/07/2022 – Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets and tips for Saturday’s race meetings at Glorious Goodwood, Galway, New Market and Lingfield Park on.

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD – 30/07/2022

Race 1 No2 CLASSIC
Trainer: Richard Hannon – Jockey: Pat Dobbs

CLASSIC oozed promise when troubling the judge and collecting a m8nor cheque on his Newbury Introduction. The Dubawi colt has benefitted greatly from that experience and can put his best foot forward in the colours of long-standing Hannon patron Julie Wood.

Race 2 No12 DARK SHOT
Trainer: Scott Dixon – Jockey: Kieran O’Neill

Thursday’s Magnolia Cup winner DARK SHOT will surely not be allowed the leeway he poached from a flag start that day, but the gelding nevertheless has plenty in his favour at the foot of the weights and with his tail up. The veteran can blaze a similarly fast trail and prove to be a hare that doesn’t come back.

Race 3 No3 SAM COOKE (Each Way)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rob Hornby

If hat-trick seeker SOAPY STEVENS is inconvenienced by a high draw, SAM COOKE can be the protagonist to benefit most in this long distance handicap.

Soapy Stevens looks the main arrow of three Mark Johnston-trained challengers and his stable is looking for a fifth success in the race since 2015. However there’s a touch of class about SAM COOKE, who with only three outings under his belt this year strips relatively fresh and ready to turn the tables on a narrow defeat at the hooves of the former at Newmarket’s July meeting.

It should be a different story on these revised terms, while any rain (though unlikely) would greatly assist the selection. At longer odds BAGUE D’OR can also get into the argument.

Race 4 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2)
No4 URBAN ARTIST (Each Way)
Trainer: Hughie Morrison – Jockey: Jason Hart

SEA LA ROSA has dominated the betting for this but the race is more open than that suggests. The latter put in a career best when second in the Lancashire Oaks but the one that can raise her game for a minor shock is URBAN ARTIST.

This strong stayer has performed as if there’s more to come by chasing home Believe In Love in the Brontë Cup and posting a midfield finish in Stratum’s Queen Alexandra Stakes.

She’s taking a bid step back in trip today but an overview of her form suggests it’s her optimum, and at a double figure price she represents good each way value.

Race 5 Coral Stewards’ Cup Handicap
No13 REGIONAL (Each Way)
Trainer: Ed Bethell – Jockey: Ryan Moore

If high numbers enjoy a draw advantage in the biggest betting contest of the week then REGIONAL can put his name on the scoresheet.

Breaking from stall 27 in a field of 28, the Territories gelding has very few miles on the clock since joining Bethell just under a year ago. Since then he’s won at Haydock and placed in four of only five other outings. He looked unfortunate to be chinned by Burning Cash at Doncaster and has Ryan Moore on his back for the first time.

Another that has hovered close to notching a big win is POPMASTER, who succumbed only to the very smart Rohaan in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot. The grey is clearly in a good place but drawn on the other side of the track from the main selection.

INVER PARK is on an impressive winning roll for George Boughey and also has to be taken seriously. However he’s nudging up the weights in the same manner as MR WAGYU who carries a 6lb penalty for his recent gritty triumph at the Curragh.

And with his sprinters now in excellent form, Michael Dods’s duo of COMMANCHE FALLS and TINTO also require close inspection.

Prediction: 1st REGIONAL, 2nd Popmaster, 3rd Tinto, 4th Inver Park, 5th Commanche Falls

Race 6 No7 ROMAN DRAGON
Trainer: Hugo Palmer – Jockey: Harry Davies

ROMAN DRAGON deservedly opened his account for the season with a decisive success at Chester. The Roodee is his happy playground, but if taking to these undulations he’s capable of giving his foes a tough target to aim at.

Race 7 No2 AJERO (Nap)
Trainer: Kim Bailey – Jockey: Jim Crowley

AJERO is a fascinating candidate for the nightcap, and from an excellent draw should be in contention throughout before stamping his authority on affairs in the final quarter mile.

He should get a lovely lead from Wednesday’s course winner FOREST FALCON, and can hunt that one down at the business end. The latter’s stablemate DUTCH DECOY can also claim a cheque, while SWEET REWARD makes some appeal at longer odds.

GALWAY – 30/07/2022

Race 1 No15 ROYAL ROMEO
Trainer: Noel Meade – Jockey: Brian Cooper

Point winner ROYAL ROMEO took well to hurdles when chasing home Champagne Problem on his latest start at Cork. He attracted a welter of support, and can show by beating GAMIN ORIGINAL that he’s a horse with a bright future.

Race 4 No18 TOUCHING CLOUDS (Nap)
Trainer: Dermot Weld – Jockey: Chris Hayes

TOUCHING CLOUDS gave promise of better things to come when narrowly denied on her introduction at Gowran. The daughter of leading sire War Front should progress to open her account unless something less conspicuous pops out of the woodwork.

Race 7 No13 ALMA LIBRE (Each Way)
Trainer: Miss Lupini – Jockey: Wayne Lordan

ALMA LIBRE is a beautifully-bred filly with abundant stamina in her chart, and has cut it in big field handicaps at the main tracks in each of her last three outings. She looked to enjoy stepping up to this mile and a half at the Curragh last time, and is overdue a change of luck.

NEWMARKET – 30/07/2022

Race 1 No11 PREPENSE (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote

PREPENSE is a name that’s been barked all over the track but ground concerns have twice hampered her arrival for racecourse duty. The daughter of Kingman has moved well with older horses at home, and has a good working ethic that can carry her to victory on this belated debut.

Race 6 No1 INGRA TOR
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Cieren Fallon

INGRA TOR is on a recovery mission after blotting his copybook in valuable sprint handicaps at York and this track. He wasn’t ready for the rigours of the first assignment, and on the second found himself in a small group on the far side that were disadvantaged. That was nevertheless an underwhelming run, and he needs to bounce back in this smaller field and with a new rider in the irons.

LINGFIELD PARK – 30/07/2022

Race 3 No8 WHAT AN ICON (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass

Though beaten a long way in Trillium’s race at Newbury, WHAT AN ICON has learned from that and might trouble the judge at a rewarding double figure price. Other than the first two in the betting, Bonnsie and Zebra Star, this is a very weakly contested maiden.

Race 7 No10 COCONUT BAY ( Each Way)
Trainer: Hughie Morrison – Jockey: Rhys Clutterbuck

Bated Breath filly COCONUT BAY is amongst the least experienced runners, but after earning for the first time on handicap debut at Lingfield she’s at the right end of the weights to go forward and open her account.
