Neil Morrice shares all of his best bets and tips for Tuesday’s racing coming your way from Kempton Park, Chepstow, Wetherby and Wolverhampton on 27 December 2022.
KEMPTON PARK
Race 2 Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase (Grade 2)
No1 AUCUNRISQUE
Trainer: Chris Gordon – Jockey: Tom Cannon
Accurate jumping is the hallmark of AUCUNRISQUE’s profile and this tight track should bring out the best in him against the very smart Boothill. The selection couldn’t cope with Frere D’Armes at the end of his latest chase outing at Newbury, but he was a cosy winner of his only previous start at this course, and can exploit any weakness in Boothill who had an impossible task against Jonbon at Sandown and is now in much calmer waters.
Race 4 Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase (Grade 2)
No1 EDWARDSTONE (Nap)
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Tom Cannon
EDWARDSTONE looked the two-mile champion in waiting when taking out the Tingle Creek Chase with aplomb on his reappearance at the beginning of the month. Last season’s Arkle Trophy hero unleashed a telling change of gear between the last two Sandown fences to put his rivals to the sword, and granted a repeat of that effort is impossible to oppose. The only one that could possibly give him problems is Nube Negra who though successful in the Grade 2 Schloer Chase at Cheltenham had nothing to beat. He also has a useful turn of foot, but will surely be playing for minor money.
Race 5 No1 REMASTERED
Trainer: David Pipe – Jockey: Tom Scudamore
REMASTERED is realising his potential in a big way this season, scoring easily when reappearing at Aintree before finding only Le Milos his superior in the Coral Trophy at Newbury where he traveled and jumped beautifully. The chestnut has to concede lumps of weight to some of his foes, but looks the way to go in a race where Your Darling and Striking A Pose should also be included in all exotics.
CHEPSTOW
Race 4 Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2)
No7 PERSEUS WAY (Nap)
Trainer: Gary Moore – Jockey: Jamie Moore
PERSEUS WAY had good form on the Flat and has transferred a lot of that to hurdling since joining his trainer in the summer. He would have given Scriptwriter a lot more to think about had he jumped more fluently at Cheltenham, then made no mistake in a minor contest at Leicester. This looks an open heat, and he can follow in the hoof prints of former stablemate Porticello who won the corresponding race in 2021.
Race 6 CORAL WELSH GRAND NATIONAL HANDICAP CHASE
No4 QUICK WAVE (Each Way)
Trainer: Venetia Williams- Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
QUICK WAVE was an authoritative scorer on her return from almost a year off the track at Sandown, staying on impressively up the final hill, and on that evidence looks like a horse that is better than her revised mark indicates. The nine-year-old had more in hand than the 4lb she’s been raised, and should revel in the conditions for a trainer who excels with this type of individual. The Big Breakaway hasn’t managed to reach the heights hoped for him after he was purchased for a lofty sum as a novice. However, he went down with all guns blazing on his return to the fray at Haydock and could still prove a big earner for the Tizzards. The Galloping Bear fell on his only visit here over hurdles but has subsequently landed a Grade 3 handicap chase at Haydock. He wasn’t at his best when returned to hurdles for his latest start at Carlisle, but that should have blown away any cobwebs. Fortescue is a dour stayer that will be staying on when many have called it quits. He should take home a cheque of some kind and is a long range fancy for the Grand National itself at Aintree next April.
Prediction: 1st QUICK WAVE, 2nd The Big Breakaway, 3rd The Galloping Bear, 4th Fortescue
Race 7 No1 MISTER COFFEY
Trainer: Nicky Henderson – Jockey: Nico de Boinville
MISTER COFFEY is an experienced jumper who can make light of top weight in this novices’ handicap chase. While he is an infrequent winner, he’s been very unfortunate not to have won over fences, especially when worried out of it by Chambord in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March. He looked overwhelmed by the fences in the Topham Trophy at Aintree, but is normally a good jumper and strong traveller. This course with its five fences in the home straight should play to his strengths.
WETHERBY
Race 2 No4 JUNIPER
Trainer: Harry Whittington – Jockey: Sean Quinlan
JUNIPER might not have run many times this year but her successes over fences and hurdles in the spring show she’s better than ever. Back over fences in this distaffers’ contest, she can now complet a hat-trick and assist her trainer in getting his show firmly back on the road after a temporary closure.
Race 3 No1 ROYAL MOGUL
Trainer: Donald McCain Jnr – Jockey: Brian Hughes
A penalty for a facile Catterick success shouldn’t prevent ROYAL MOGUL following up on the way to better things. That was his first run after a wind operation, and shows he’s operating at his best level yet.
Race 4 No2 BASS ROCK (Nap)
Trainer: Sandy Thomson – Jockey: Ryan Mania
BASS ROCK put in an assured jumping display to score decisively on his chase debut at Carlisle, and is one of the best young prospects trained in the North. He is the winner of four of his last six outings and should prove even better over fences than he was as a hurdler. It will take something super smart to lower his colours.
WOLVERHAMPTON
Race 2 No7 TWILIGHT MISCHIEF (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: Trevor Whelan
TWILIGHT MISCHIEF wasn’t beaten far after being given plenty to do on her latest start here last month, and this strapping individual is the type that could have more to give, and leave her previous form behind at generous odds.
Race 5 No1 OVERACTIVE (Nap)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rob Hornby
From the rail, OVERACTIVE may need to commit, but on the evidence of his second to Good Karma on debut over a slightly shorter distance will be hard to stop for a trainer who does well with his occasional runners at Dunstall Park.
