Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets and tips for Wednesday’s race meetings at Glorious Goodwood, Redcar, Perth and Sandown Park on 27/07/2022.
GLORIOUS GOODWOOD – 27/07/2022
Race 1 No1 SECRET STATE
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
By champion sire Dubawi out of a mare that finished first past the post in the 1,000 Guineas, SECRET STATE could be forgiven for having to carry top weight in a tricky opener.
The colt has started favourite for each of his four career starts, delivering on the last three at Chester, Nottingham and Ascot.
He gamely made the move into handicap company pay on the last occasion and is one to remain loyal to, though Soulcombe and Mugader are both capable of causing him problems.
Race 2 Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3)
No16 SAMAHRAM
Trainer: Francis Henri Graffard – Jockey: Frankie Dettori
SAMAHRAM commands attention as the only French-trained runner here on Day 1.
The daughter of German Derby winner Sea The Moon has shown an ability to get the job done without winning by far, evidenced by her short head triumph in a Listed race at Longchamp last time.
She has added allure with Dettori on the irons and can prove more than a match for Royal Ascot winner HEREDIA and SOFT WHISPER.
Race 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes (Group 3)
No7 WALBANK
Trainer: David Loughnane – Jockey: Rossa Ryan
WALBANK finished second in what turned out to be a messy race for the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The Kodiac colt avoided the trouble caused by eventual winner The Ridler and in finishing second confirmed the promise of his earlier runs at Ascot and York.
With speed on both sides of his pedigree he’s the type of individual that can carry on earning in Group races over 1000 metres through the summer and autumn.
Race 4 QATAR SUSSEX STAKES (Group 1)
No5 ALCOHOL FREE (Each Way)
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: Rob Hornby
The traditional highlight of the week sees BAAEED defending an eight-race unbeaten record, and in the tradition laid down by the incomparable Frankel is on a voyage that connections hope will see him retire to the breeding shed with an unblemished total at the end of the year.
Like Frankel, who won this race in successive years, BAAEED is set to step up to a mile and a quarter in the Juddmonte International at York next month, before signing off in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in the autumn.
Defeat for the Sea The Stars colt is seen as unthinkable to the vast majority of racing’s cognoscenti, but one that could ruffle his feathers and worth a speculative bet to usurp him is ALCOHOL FREE.
An impressive winner of this contest in 2021, the No Nay Never filly underwhelmed after that, but showed she is back to the same level of form when careering away with the July Cup at Newmarket.
Anything can happen when a filly that’s proven at Group 1 level regains her sparkle, and if for any reason the favourite fails to show up, she can be the one to capitalise.
Race 5 No4 SEA SPEEDWELL
Trainer: William Haggas – Jockey: Tom Marquand
The beautifully-bred SEA SPEEDWELL has done nothing wrong, and with only three races under her belt is surely capable of raising her game. Second to Oriole on her turf debut at Leicester, she will be more streetwise and should take some catching of allowed to go forward from her pitch against the rail.
Race 6 No10 UNION COURT (Nap)
Trainer: Ed Walker – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
This rates one of the toughest races on the card but UNION COURT holds solid claims granted the class of race she’s competed in.
After straight successes at Leicester and Chepstow she was beaten only six lengths into a midfield finish by Little Big Bear in the Windsor Castle Stakes, and then finished just out of the money in the Newbury Super Sprint, won by Eddie’s Boy.
If bringing that level of form to the table she will be involved in the finish.
Race 7 No7 BOWMAN ( Each Way)
Trainer: Laura Mongan – Jockey: William Carson
BOWMAN failed to menace on the latest of two visits to this track but has returned to somewhere hear his best with a win and a narrow defeat at Epsom this summer. He seems happier racing on turf, and from a cracking draw can assume a handy position from which to attack and stay out of trouble in the home straight.
REDCAR – 27/07/2022
Race 1 No1 HOY (Nap)
Trainer: David Barron – Jockey: Ben Robinson
HOY backed up the promise of his fine debut run with a clear cut success at Carlisle. Those two starts have given him a cutting edge as he takes on a well touted newcomer in Chuzzlewit, who is well worth a market check.
Race 6 No10 EXCESSABLE
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Brandon Wilkie
EXCESSABLE was beaten just two lengths when fifth to Enraged at Beverley after proving easy to back. He is well treated on his best form and shouldn’t mind the step up to six furlongs on this entirely different track.
PERTH – 27/07/2022
Race 3 No2 LAKE SHORE DRIVE (Nap)
Trainer: Laura Morgan – Jockey: Brian Hughes
LAKE SHORE DRIVE has proved a good earner with a win and two seconds from as many outings over hurdles this year. He looked a shade unlucky to be worried out of it at Worcester last time, and is in a good spot to go one better.
Race 7 No1 ILLUSION OF TIMETrainer: Laura Morgan – Jockey: Brian Hughes
ILLUSION OF TIME created a favourable impression with his cosy first time out triumph at Stratford. He can help make it a good day for his trainer and jockey by seeing off Irish challenger Say You Say Me.
SANDOWN PARK – 27/07/2022
Race 2 No5 BOOM BOOM POW (Nap)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Hector Crouch
Even though she’s found one to beat her on each of her three outings, there’s nothing ungenuine about BOOM BOOM POW. The Havana Grey filly should enjoy this first nursery assignment and recoup losses that are merely lent.
Race 5 No7 ARCLIGHT
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Luke Morris
Champs Elysees filly ARCLIGHT progressed from race to race to open her account on third juvenile start at Chelmsford. She’s done well through the winter and is poised for an earning run for a stable amongst the winners.
