Neil Morrice outlines his best bets and tips for Monday’s British meetings at Market Rasen, Taunton and Southwell on 22/02/2022.
MARKET RASEN – 22/02/2022
Race 3 No3 MARSH WREN
Trainer: Stuart Edmunds – Jockey: Ciaran Gethings
The nicest prospect in this mares’ novices’ hurdle is MARSH WREN. She’s up against a red hot favourite in Ile De Jersey, but has claims to down that rival following an improved run to chase home Lady Of The Night at Fontwell. While she will have to improve to win, she can.
Race 5 No3 RADETZKY MARCH (Nap)
Trainer: Laura Morgan – Jockey: David Noonan
A hat-trick looks on the cards for RADETSKY MARCH after his rapid-fire wins at Fakenham and Leicester. The rejuvenated selection looked to have a ton in hand for his latest strike, and his trainer can hardly do a thing wrong.
Race 7 No5 SPANISH PRESENT
Trainer: Martin Keighley- Jockey: Brian Hughes
While SPANISH PRESENT is bred to enjoy better ground, he ran well on heavy in Ireland and makes his debut under Rules after three solid earning efforts over there. His form gives him a good shot at beating the long absent Shantou’s Melody, who carries a 7lb penalty.
TAUNTON – 22/02/2022
Race 1 No3 PER VINO VERITAS (Each Way)
Trainer: Colin Tizzard – Jockey: Harry Kimber
This is a punter-friendly card that offers value in its opener via PER VINO VERITAS. As the least experienced runner in a field of mainly out of form horses, the selection can make his mark on his first run in a handicap.
Race 3 No5 JEREMY THE JINN
Trainer: Fergal O’Brien – Jockey: Paddy Brennan
JEREMY THE JINN has good form to take into this first outing of 2022. The bumper winner shaped with abundant promise on debut over hurdles over course and distance before Christmas and hails from a yard whose horses have maintained a high strike-rate throughout the season.
Race 4 No1 BRIANSTORM
Trainer: Venetia Williams – Jockey: Charlie Deutsch
Though travelling best for much of the journey, BRIANSTORM was ultimately unable to resist the late challenge of Guetapan Collonges at Market Rasen. However, that was a solid enough effort from this in and out performer, whose trainer is mopping up with her chasers on the widespread testing ground.
Race 5 No6 TIMBERMAN (Nap)
Trainer: Fergal O’Brien – Jockey: Paddy Brennan
TIMBERMAN should be a bet worth waiting for in this handicap hurdle. His natural talent has manifested itself with two wins from four outings this season, and Brennan is the right man to anchor him for a trademark late challenge. He’s coming back from a near 100-day break, but has shown that he is effective fresh, including on his first run of the current campaign.
SOUTHWELL – 22/02/2022
Race 3 No2 ZARZYNI
Trainer: David Barron – Jockey: Connor Beasley
ZARZYNI hails from a stable that excels with its sprinters and is strongly fancied to resume winning ways after back-to-back defeats here. The five-year-old can demonstrate his appreciation for a return to the m8ni um trip by making this a first win on the all-weather.
Race 4 No5 SEAGULL’S NEST (Each Way)
Trainer: Mike Appleby – Jockey: Alistair Rawlinson
Bird For Life and SEAGULL’S NEST are two to look at in this low grade stayers’ handicap. While Bird For Life signalled with a recent near miss that she’s on the cusp of a breakthrough, Seagull’s Nest raised her game on her latest start for her trainer to post a similar effort and lose narrowly at Newcastle last week. The continued use of headgear can assist the selection to belatedly open her account.
Race 5 No3 ROAMIN IN GLOAMIN (Nap)
Trainer: Karl Burke – Jockey: Sam Fielden
ROAMIN IN GLOAMIN is unlucky not to have shed his maiden tag and can now put the record straight. He’s not enjoyed the rub of the green on his last two outings, including when second for the third outing in succession here earlier in the month. He’s shown an aptitude for both the course and surface, meaning there can be no excuses this time.
