CHELTENHAM

Race 2 SCHLOER CHASE (Grade 2)

No3 EDWARDSTONE (Nap)
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Tom Cannon

Successful in all but two of his seven chase outings including the Arkle last season, EDWARDSTONE returns to the scene of his Festival triumph as an automatic favourite for this early trial for the Queen Mother Champion Chase. He faces a strong opponent in last year’s winner of this Nube Negra, but receives 3lb from the latter and should have the bases covered.

Race 3 No3 FANTASTIKAS (Each Way)
Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies – Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies

Locally trained FANTASTIKAS ran well when just out of the money in the Ultima Chase here in March but was unsuited by the hurly-burly of the Scottish National on his final start. He’s a young horse with a good career in front of him in long-distance handicaps and showed when storming home on his first run back last season that he can operate effectively off a break.

Race 4 UNIBET GREATWOOD HANDICAP HURDLE

No10 SEVERANCE (Each Way)
Trainer: Ben Pauling – Jockey: Kielan Woods

SEVERANCE would be a deserving winner of this first major handicap hurdle of the season granted how well he ran in defeat in a number of valuable prizes last season. He again acquitted himself well when beaten just over two lengths into third behind Effernock Fizz in the Welsh Champion Hurdle last month, and if getting the rub of the green can again claim a cheque. Others I would put into the exotics mix are GIN COCO, THOUSAND TEARS and HARBOUR LAKE.

Race 5 Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2)

No7 SPRINGWELL BAY
Trainer: Jonjo O’Neill – Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr

O’Neill rarely leaves this fixture empty-handed and in SPRINGWELL BAY the trainer looks to have his best winning chance of the weekend. The selection put in an eye-taking round of hurdling to score on his reappearance at Carlisle and should be able to utilise his turn of foot to see-off Fennor Cross up the final hill.

FONTWELL PARK

Race 3 No2 AVILES (Nap)
Trainer: Gary Moore – Jockey: Jamie Moore

Former French-based AVILES has shown a willing attitude in his work and schooling ahead of a first run under Rules. As long as the ground doesn’t get too quick he should build on the promise of his only start at Bordeaux and outstay his rivals over this two and a quarter miles.

Race 4 Vickers.Bet Southern National Handicap Chase

No2 ALMAZHAR GARDE (Each Way)
Trainer: Charlie Longsdon – Jockey: Lilly Pinchin

ALMAZHAR GARDE takes a keen grip which if repeated will see him lead a merry dance from the start. He does, however, have the ability to give himself a breather while in control, and will need to do the same if he’s to get home over the three and a half miles. He put in a respectable effort to finish just out of the money on his return to the fray at Cheltenham and should find this tight, figure-of-eight course more to his liking.
