Neil Morrice outlines his best bets and tips for Wednesday’s British meetings at Newmarket, Cheltenham, Beverly, Southwell and Kempton Park on 13/04/2022.
NEWMARKET – 13/04/2022
Race 4 Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes (Group 3)
No4 RUN TO FREEDOM (Each Way)
Trainer: Henry Candy – Jockey: David Probert
If RUN TO FREEDOM can cross the bridge from handicapper to Pattern race horse he should go well in a race that commemorates one of the fastest sprinters of all time. The son of Muhaarar hails from a stable well versed in exacting above normal improvement from its sprinters, and though speculatively advised, he can trouble the judge.
Race 5 bet365 Craven Stakes (Group 3)
No5 NATIVE TRAIL (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
The star turn in this recognised trial for the 2,000 Guineas is NATIVE TRAIL, who on his achievements last year only has to show up to win. The Godolphin-owned colt went unbeaten in back-to-back Group 1s when taking out the National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst over a slightly shorter trip than today’s mile. Nothing but another impressive display will do as he attempts to consolidate his place at the head of the Classic market.
Race 7 No4 TRANQUIL NIGHT
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
It should be Godolphin and Appleby again in the hottest three-year-old only handicap run so far this season. Their candidate TRANQUIL NIGHT responded to the fitting of a hood to land the odds in successive novice races at Kempton, and although the assessor looks to have taken no chances, he can complete a hat-trick on this first handicap outing.
CHELTENHAM – 13/04/2022
Race 2 No1 SIMPLY THE BETTS (Nap)
Trainer: Paul Nicholls – Jockey: Harry Cobden
Course specialist SIMPLY THE BETTS returns refreshed from a break and can take out the day’s Grade 2 feature. His second to Vienna Court in a Grade 3 handicap chase was his best of three efforts at the track this season, and though under par in the Cotswold Chase last time, he was a back-to-back scorer here in 2020, landing the Grade 3 Plate at that year’s Festival. His trainer reckons Simply The Betts will get his mojo back today, and if that’s the case he can thwart the strong challenge of Stolen Silver, whose trainer’s horses underwhelmed at Aintree.
Race 5 No3 STORM CONTROL
Trainer: Kerry Lee – Jockey: Richard Patrick
STORM CONTROL is another looking to bounce back from a bad day at the office. That happened when he was never going a stride and had to be pulled up in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster, which followed an excellent second in the SkyBet Chase at the same track. The selection had earlier jumped superbly to score at Newbury, and having been given a short break, shouldn’t be written off.
BEVERLEY -13/04/2022
Race 3 No15 BOND BOY (Each Way)
Trainer: Mike Appleby – Jockey: Theodore Ladd
In an open affair the front running tactics of BOND BOY can prove fruitful and bring profit. The Equiano colt has outperformed his price in successive all-weather starts at Southwell and Wolverhampton and creeps into this first handicap assignment off a feather weight. He should enjoy the return to grass, and if breaking well may be hard to peg back.
Race 6 No3 STEVENSON (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Darragh Keenan
STEVENSON turned over the odds-on Beluga Gold at Kempton after locking horns with that rival and readily seeing him off in the final furlong. The Havana Gold colt moved beautifully in his winding up gallop for this novice stakes, and has strong claims to follow-up under a penalty.
Race 7 No1 HOLY ENDEAVOUR
Trainer: Richard Fahey – Jockey: PJ McDonald
HOLY ENDEAVOUR spent more than a year on the sidelines nursing an injury, but since coming back has earned on both outings on the Tapeta surface. She’s going to be involved at the business end of the nightcap if performing to those levels, with at least as much scope for progression as her foes.
SOUTHWELL – 13/04/2022
Race 4 No2 BLENKINSOP (Nap)
Trainer: Henry Daly – Jockey: High Nugent
Saldana will be at short odds to get her career back on track in this novices’ hurdle, but could find BLENKINSOP to be a thorn in her side. The selection raised his game to get within three lengths of Head Law at Huntingdon, form which has been significantly boosted by the winner.
Race 7 No10 MONSIEUR POM POM (Each Way)
Trainer: Adrian Keatley – Jockey: Tom Midgley
MONSIEUR POM POM should give us a good run for our money in the concluding conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle. As one of the least exposed runners the four-year-old is open to progression, and though beaten a long way at Sandown last time, is now in an easier race.
KEMPTON PARK – 13/04/2022
Race 2 No2 NAME IN LIGHTS (Nap)
Trainer: Colin Tizzard – Jockey: Brendan Powell
NAME IN LIGHTS had his Wincanton win devalued when stablemate Harlem Soul underperformed at that course on Sunday. However, he’s a strong traveller and slick jumper who could easily have a lot more to offer, and he’s fancied to follow-up under a penalty.
Race 5 No3 UP FOR PAROL
Trainer: Jamie Snowden – Jockey: Kevin Brogan
UP FOR PAROL totally failed to justify the market support that preceded his run in the ultra competitive Imperial Cup at Sandown. He went out like a light in the homeward climb to the line, and needs to bounce back. Earlier evidence suggests he’s going to be hard to beat if indeed he can put that setback behind him.
