Neil Morrice provides his best bets and tips for Thursday’s British meetings at Doncaster, Ffos Las, Huntingdon and Newcastle on 10/02/2022.
DONCASTER – 10/02/2022
Race 1: SEABOROUGH (Each Way)
Trainer: Derek Shaw – Jockey: Aaron Anderson
Infrequent winner SEABOROUGH should be suited by this course with its long home straight that gives him plenty of time to pick off rivals late. And although he has a tendency to shirk the issue in a finish, the seven-year-old can better his narrow defeat by Byzantine Empire over course and distance back in December.
Race 6: SCARPIA (Nap)
Trainer: Nicky Henderson – Jockey: Nathan Brennan
SCARPIA is of serious interest in this handicap hurdle by want of the fact she is her trainer’s only runner at the meeting. Having bolted up under the same talented conditional rider at Plumpton, she still looks well handicapped in this attempt to go back-to-back.
FFOS LAS – 10/02/2022
Race 1: PHANTOM GETAWAY (Nap)
Trainer: Kim Bailey – Jockey: David Bass
PHANTOM GETAWAY should be a bet to behold in the opener to a fascinating card. The chestnut looked for a long time like repelling Bridge North on jumps debut at Ludlow. Not only will he have learned much from that, but the form took a notable boost when the winner ran well in much better company.
Race 3: SOLDIER OF DESTINY (Each Way)
Trainer: Jamie Snowden – Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
Top weight SOLDIER OF DESTINY is built for the job and has undergone wind surgery since a satisfactory first effort over fences behind Red Rookie at Hereford. He’s a smart prospect, and can surprise a couple of recent winners on the way to better things.
Race 5: ALKOPOP
Trainer: Toby Lawes – Jockey: Harry Bannister
The ground can’t come deep enough for ALKOPOP, who enjoys a 7lb swing for five lengths with his recent course and distance conqueror Fairlawn Flyer. The grey fell on his seasonal return, so was effectively having a first proper run back. It shows that it will be merely a matter of time before he opens his account over fences.
HUNTINGDON – 10/02/2022
Race 2: TIMELESS BEAUTY (Nap)
Trainer: Fergal O’Brien – Jockey: Adrian Heskin
It’s very hard to take TIMELESS BEAUTY’s Lingfield run at face value and the only explanation is surely the heavy ground that was also holding. Beaten a distance that day, she can bounce back to the level of form that saw her win and place in her previous three outings over fences since joining her trainer.
Race 4: HARBOUR LAKE
Trainer: Alan King – Jockey: Tom Cannon
Unbeaten HARBOUR LAKE can make light of a step up the class ladder in this featured Sidney Banks Hurdle. He’s up against talented foes like Elle Est Belle and Wonderwall but has impressed sufficiently in both outings over jumps to ndicate he needs to be taken seriously.
Race 6: GALACTIC POWER (Each Way)
Trainer: Robin Dickin – Jockey: Jack Quinlan
GALACTIC POWER is a speculative choice to turn back the clock and earn in this competitive handicap hurdle. The 12-year-old can get outpaced but stayed on strongly for a place finish behind Love Actually on second run back at Taunton. That should have blown away any cobwebs, and brought him to the boil for this suitably longer test.
NEWCASTLE – 10/02/2022
Race 4: EEH BAH GUM (Each Way)
Trainer: Kevin Ryan – Jockey: Oisin McSweeney
This looks a good opportunity for EEH BAH GUM to come out of racing’s wilderness. It’s well over three years since his last success, but when returned to Tapeta on debut for Ryan the gelding went down narrowly in a driving finish at Southwell. It signals a change of scenery has done him the power of good.
Race 7: DREAMSELLER (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Ella McCain
DREAMSELLER hasn’t missed the judge in his last six starts on grass and sand, latterly finishing second over this course and distance last month. He’s formed a good earning partnership with his capable rider, and should again take home a cheque.
