07/07/2022 – Thursday’s Best Bets and Tips

Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets and tips for Thursday’s race meetings at Newmarket, Carlisle, Doncaster, Epsom Downs and Newbury on 07/07/2022.

NEWMARKET – 07/07/2022

Race 3 CLOSE BROTHERS JULY STAKES (Group 2)
No4 LITTLE BIG BEAR (Nap)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien – Jockey: Ryan Moore

LITTLE BIG BEAR landed some good bets when taking out the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. The No Nay Never colt will enjoy moving back to the 1200 metres distance and should get the better of Persian Force, who himself ran a cracker to chase home Bradsell on the Coventry Stakes at the same meeting.

Race 4 No9 INGRA TOR (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Tom Marquand

INGRA TOR is a horse I’m greatly looking forward to seeing running in what is a retrieval mission following his calamitous experience in a similar contest at York. The Churchill colt seemed to be overawed by the occasion, and resented being held up behind horses on the Knavesmire. He will be given much more opportunity to go forward, and if replicating on the track what he does at home holds strong win and place claims in the best betting race on Day 1 of the meeting.

Race 5 PRINCESS OF WALES’S CLOSE BROTHERS STAKES (Group 2)
No5 WEST END CHARMER (Each Way)
Trainer: Mark Johnston – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni

Slow starts have cost Yibir on his last couple of outings and should the chestnut succumb to that flaw again WEST END CHARMER can be the one to take advantage. The six-year-old hasn’t done much wrong since progressing into Listed company. He was competitive in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot and even though this represents a big step up in class he appeals as a horse that could have a lot more to offer.

Race 6 No6 MIGHTY ULYSSES
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Frankie Dettori

MIGHTY ULYSSES put in a very solid effort when just out of the money in the St James’s Palace Stakes. He signals the patching up of the fall out between his trainer and jockey, and in a big class drop from Group 1 to Listed can outpoint Monaadah.

CARLISLE – 07/07/2022

Race 6 No5 RICH KING (Nap)
Trainer: Ed Bethell – Jockey: PJ McDonald

RICH KING has thrived since making the switch to handicaps this year with a second at Redcar and a win at Haydock. The Gleneagles gelding wasn’t over taxed for his paper thin margin of victory last time, and his trainer looks to have found a good opportunity for him to follow up.

DONCASTER – 07/07/2022

Race 4 No3 ENDEARED (Nap)
Trainer: James Fanshawe- Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa

ENDEARED skipped an opportunity last week owing to unsuitable ground but can prove a bet worth waiting for. The Dark Angel colt has the best form of those that have run in this maiden, and if running as well as he’s been working should open his account.

Race 7 No5 BUNGLEY (Each Way)
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Tony Hamilton

BUNGLEY has taken home several cheques this year and deserves to enjoy the rub of the green and put her head in front. Her trainer is having a good season with his 3yo handicappers, and she has strong claims to bring to the table.

EPSOM DOWNS – 07/07/2022

Race 5 No9 DELAHOUSSAYE (Each Way)
Trainer: Brian O’Rourke – Jockey: Kieran O’Neill

DELAHOUSSAYE has knocked on the door with near misses at Brighton where he was beaten a neck by Habanero Star in a first time visor. He looked home and hosed when sweeping through to lead, only to get mugged in the final couple of strides. Proven on a switchback course like this, and getting weight from his foes, he has a good chance of opening his account.

NEWBURY – 07/07/2022

Race 2 No2 WHISTLE AND FLUTE (Nap)
Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton – Jockey: Charles Bishop

WHISTLE AND FLUTE was found to be sick after flopping at Beverley, and was given a big ask when contesting the Windsor Castle not long after. A line can be drawn through both runs, and he can use this as a stepping stone back onto the winning ladder.

Race 3 No6 MISS ATTITUDE (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass

Cityscape filly MISS ATTITUDE showed good natural pace before fading on her Goodwood introduction. Like most of the juveniles from her stable she’s learned a lot from that initial experience, and can put in a solid earning run.
