Neil Morrice gives us his tips for Tuesday’s British meetings at Goodwood, Hexham, Leicester and Catterick on 06/09/2022.
GOODWOOD – 06/09/2022
Race 1: MUJID
Trainer: Joe Tickle – Jockey: Taylor Fisher
Frankel gelding MUJID was an extraordinary 15 lengths winner of an apprentice handicap at Ffos Las to make it four earning runs from as many outings for his trainer. From his revised mark and with the same 7lb claiming pilot on board he should prove hard to stop in this follow-up attempt.
Race 2: BAND OF STEEL (Nap)
Trainer: Sean Woods – Jockey: Rab Havlin
The Woods stable has done well with its juveniles this year, and in BAND OF STEEL it has another potentially useful prospect. The Golden Horn colt chase down the more experienced Zu Run on his Chelmsford introduction when attracting market support. Wiser and more mentally focussed for that initial experience, he can go one better en route to a bountiful autumn.
Race 5: CANDLE OF HOPE (Each Way)
Trainer: Richard Hughes – Jockey: William Buick
In CANDLE OF HOPE’s favour is that she’s been running in better races, and is going to enjoy a class drop. Her double penalty doesn’t make things easy, but being beaten only a length and a half by Victory Dance in a Newbury Listed race and finishing just out of the money in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes here are solid reasons to side with her for a big earning run in the colours of The Queen.
Race 7: TIME STEP
Trainer: Sir Mark Todd – Jockey: Rob Hornby
Time Test colt TIME STEP looks the way to go in the nightcap. With just three outings under his belt he’s by far the least exposed candidate for this sprint, while his Ffos Las debut win and subsequent seconds at Chelmsford and Salisbury stamp him as a danger horse on his first handicap venture.
CATTERICK – 06/09/2022
Race 2: BRECKLAND (Nap)
Trainer: Keith Dalgleish – Jockey: Billy Garritty
When the ground rides on the soft side an outer draw is not its usual disadvantage on the round course here. This is good news for connections of BRECKLAND, who pulled clear of the remainder when narrowly denied by Shine On Brendan at Hamilton. He should enjoy dropping back in trip, and can make it a fifth earning run in as many starts for his trainer.
Race 6: LICIT
Trainer: Tim Easterby – Jockey: Sean Kirrane
LICIT has taken home a cheque in each of his three 2022 outings and is surely set to benefit from that select campaigning. He’s inching closer to a first triumph for his trainer, and is the type that should benefit from easier conditions through the autumn.
LEICESTER – 06/09/2022
Race 2: VERMILION
Trainer: Andrew Balding – Jockey: David Probert
Kodiac filly VERMILION attracted support and wasn’t beaten far when third to Mehme on her Salisbury debut. She should progress from that eye taking first effort in an admittedly tricky 1st leg of the novice in which previous scorer Behind The Scenes as well as Martini Nights need respecting.
Race 6: ARCLIGHT
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Luke Morris
A move up to a mile and a half should prove to be just what the doctor ordered for ARCLIGHT, who after a couple of placed efforts looks to be on the cusp of a return to the winner’s circle. A winner on her only all-weather start at Chelmsford last autumn, she made Wisper fight for the spoils at Brighton last month, signalling that she’s now cherry ripe to score.
Race 7: CHICKEN ITZA (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore
Although unable in two starts this season to reproduce the level of her homework on the track proper, CHICKEN ITZA is worth another chance in this fillies’ handicap. She’s been a costly horse to follow, but can show with a first career win that the cash that went west on her at Haydock and Nottingham is merely lent.
HEXHAM – 06/09/2022
Race 3: NIBRAS GOLD (Nap)
Trainer: David Pipe – Jockey: David Noonan
NIBRAS GOLD has proved a shrewd purchase off the Flat with figures of 212 for his West Country connections this spring and summer. He ran into a smart foe at Worcester last time, and doesn’t look harshly treated for this first run in a handicap. He is surely not making this long journey to the borders simply for the goodness of his health.
Race 7: CHARLE BRUNE (Each Way)
Trainer: N Mechie – Jockey: Richie McLernon
CHARLE BRUNE ran better than his final placing suggests at Cartmel a week ago where he was in contention going to the final fence only to weaken on the long run in. It was an encouraging return to fences for the nine-year-old, who should be suited by this track and has a better chance than his price suggests.
