Neil Morrice provides us with his best bets and tips for Thursday’s race meetings at Brighton, Yarmouth, Nottingham, Sandown Park and Doncaster on 04/08/2022.
BRIGHTON – 04/08/2022
Race 2 No5 WHAT AN ICON (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass
WHAT AN ICON is over priced for a minor shock after a much better effort on second start at Lingfield. She was beaten 6 lengths by the winner Bonnsie but can make another step forward to down the odds-on Inspirited.
Race 3 No4 ARCLIGHT
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott – Jockey: Luke Morris
ARCLIGHT needed her comeback outing when third to New Heights at Sandown. It was her first run in over 300 days and has blown away the cobwebs for what should be a second career win and first on turf.
Race 4 No6 POSTWICK (Each Way)
Trainer: Harry Eustace – Jockey: George Wood
The featured Brighton Challenge Cup can go to POSTWICK who is the least experienced runner in the field, and the one with scope for most improvement. The jet black three-year-old is one of a brace of that age taking on Eider foes, but if progressing from his good run in a Sandown maiden can make this a winning handicap debut.
Race 7 No4 FANGORN (Nap)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: George Bass
Key to FANGORN’s chance is his ability to get onto an easy lead, and there’s every chance this giant can to supplement his recent dominating Newbury success with apprentice Bass retaining the ride.
YARMOUTH – 04/08/2022
Race 6 Num4 THE GREEN MAN (Nap)
Trainer: Joseph Parr – Jockey: James Doyle
Even though he’s finished second in half of his six career starts, THE GREEN MAN is not ungenuine and as the best bet on a very tricky card can deservedly open his account.
NOTTINGHAM – 04/08/2022
Race 1 No8 JULIET SIERRA
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Rob Hornby
JULIET SIERRA is a beautifully-bred abated Breath filly who shaped with abundant promise on an earning debut at Newmarket. She is going to build on that performance, and will be hard to beat in what isn’t an obviously strong novice.
Race 6 No5 CHICKEN ITZA (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Richard Kingscote
CHICKEN ITZA underperformed at Haydock when backed to take care of business. It didn’t represent the strength of her form from the home gallops and she’s worth another chance to put the record straight on this handicap debut.
Race 4 No11 NIGWA
Trainer: Ed Bethell – Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
Sea The Stars filly NIGWA is well regarded by her trainer and it’s easy to see why. She made the useful Thundershower pull out all the stops on debut at this track, and with that experience of the track a big asset, can now go one better.
SANDOWN PARK – 04/08/2022
Race 2 No9 MISS ATTITUDE (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Charles Bishop
MISS ATTITUDE showed blistering speed to set a scorching pace here two weeks ago before capitulating in the final 150 yards. The Cityscape filly has the ability to make short work of these of her tendency to take a keen grip can be tempered. She is a much better filly than her form figures indicate.
Race 3 No2 DESERT ORDER (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: William Buick
Dubawi colt DESERT ORDER was too green to do himself justice when third on his Newmarket introduction and possibly has scope for more improvement than market rival Arrest, who with an identical profile is sure to give the selection plenty to think about.
Race 4 No5 STEVENSON
Trainer: Mick Channon – Jockey: Charles Bishop
STEVENSON has benefitted from a break since his last run at Haydock in which he didn’t reveal his true colours. He’s been working well, while his chance will improve in bundles if there is rain in the Esher vicinity.
DONCASTER – 04/08/2022
Race 2 No5 MARSHAL DAN (Each Way)
Trainer: Heather Main – Jockey: Kevin Stott
On the back of three solid earning runs from as many starts in 2022, MARSHAL DAN deserves to get his head in front. Cut in the ground is important to the Lawman gelding, who will enjoy his favoured conditions, and has a big earning chance.
Race 3 No1 X J RASCAL (Nap)
Trainer: George Boughey – Jockey: Kieran Shoemark
X J RASCAL was one of the best backed juveniles at Goodwood last week, but after a slow start couldn’t quite reel in Prairie Falcan in the nursery. He’s taken those exertions in his stride and looks to have a favourites chance of going one better in this less competitive affair.
