Neil Morrice provides tips for Tuesday’s British race meetings at Hereford, Lingfield Park and Newcastle on 04/01/2022.
HEREFORD – 04/01/2022
Race 3 No4 MR WASHINGTON (Each Way)
Trainer: Tom Symonds – Jockey: Lilly Pinchin
Several go into battle with winning form behind them this season. One of that number is MR WASHINGTON, who since joining his trainer has posted impressive figures of 11114-12 over hurdles. His latest efforts following wind surgery point to that exercise being a success, and as a flagship for his trainer he can keep up the good work with another earning run.
Race 4 No4 RED ROOKIE (Nap)
Trainer: Emma Lavelle – Jockey: Thomas Bellamy
The one to be on in an interesting novice chase is RED ROOKIE. The chestnut indicated with a narrow defeat on chase debut at Chepstow that he’s going to better better over fences than hurdles, and was travelling like a winner when unseating his pilot at Ascot. He can recoup the losses from that uncharacteristic spill at the main expense of outsider Soldier Of Destiny.
Race 7 No6 JOBESGREEN LAD (Each Way)
Trainer: Tom George – Jockey: Jonathan Burke
In another very competitive affair, JOBESGREEN LAD can give warm favourite Nocte Volatus plenty to think about. The selection has improved from race to race in just two outings over fences, opening his account at Ludlow. He has scope fur further progression, and if this comes too soon for his rival, he can take full advantage.
LINGFIELD PARK – 04/01/2022
Race 3 No6 LEROY BROWN (Each Way)
Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies – Jockey: David Probert
Dual purpose horse LEROY BROWN has an eye taking jockey booking for this long distance handicap. He ran well on his only previous outing on Polytrack when second to Smith over course and distance in November, and would be a player if repeating that level of form.
Race 6 No5 JADE COUNTRY (Nap)
Trainer: Eve Johnson Houghton – Jockey: David Probert
Newcomer Montesecco has a shocker of a draw and is worth opposing with JADE COUNTRY, who breaks from the rail with the benefit of a couple of solid runs behind him. The son of Territories went down fighting in a close finish at Kempton last time, and if progressing from that will be hard to beat.
NEWCASTLE – 04/01/2022
Race 2 No5 SELECTO (Each Way)
Trainer: Mrs Barclay – Jockey: Joanna Mason
While it took SELECTO an eternity to get off the mark, the gelding must have benefitted from a change of scenery to score on debut for his new handler on only a third all-weather start at this course last month. There seemed to be absolutely no fluke about that 40-1 triumph, and if in the same mood he will take home another cheque.
Race 5 No3 STAR SHIELD (Nap)
Trainer: David O’Meara – Jockey: Danny Tudhope
Few jockeys are riding as well as Tudhope, and he looks to be on a worthy favourite in STAR SHIELD. The Nap is paying a fifth consecutive visit to Gosforth Park and has earned on each occasion. A narrow scorer at this mile distance in late November, he went down in a photo to Masked Identity before Christmas, and with a repeat effort can go one better.
