Who will challenge Manchester City? The Premier League is back, and our writers share their predictions and thoughts ahead of this massive campaign!
With the 2023/24 Premier League campaign getting underway this week, we’ve asked our writers to give their predictions for the season on who will win the league, finish in the top six, and get relegated.
Can Arsenal – or even Liverpool – stop Manchester City? Can Manchester United challenge for the title this season? How will Chelsea fare under Mauricio Pochettino? Will the newly promoted teams Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town survive? Find out what our writers say:
Jason Dewey says:
Manchester City
Bankrolled by a petrostate’s sovereign wealth fund and boasting arguably the best manager of the last 15 years, Manchester City should have no trouble cantering to a sixth Premier League title in seven seasons. Can Arsenal sustain a title run for a full season?
They may find the demands of the Champions League too much. Fighting on several fronts at the highest level as been the exclusive domain of City and Liverpool over the last few years, and Arsenal’s young guns – no doubt hardened by last season’s endeavours – might just fall short on both fronts.
Manchester United, in my opinion, have grossly overpaid Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, none of whom appear to readymade world beaters. Newcastle (who are also financed by petrostate’s sovereign wealth fund) are taking a more measured approach in terms of building a title-challenging squad that will only likely translate into success in a season or two. Liverpool – often the team to run City closest over the last couple of years – are going through a period of rebuilding at the moment.
They also still look like one or two injuries in defence or midfield might bring on a mini-crisis. Chelsea represent the joker in the pack. The West Londoners will go into this season under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino. The former Spurs manager wasn’t able to get on top of a rowdy PSG dressing room during his ill-fated stint in Paris. How well he’ll cope at Chelsea, a club with a rich history of dressing room revolt, remains to be seen. That many in this Chelsea squad are on ludicrously lengthy (and lucrative) contracts may complicate life for the Argentinian should things sour behind the scenes.
It appears as if Tottenham might hold keep hold of Harry Kane, but a typically disappointing transfer window and a somewhat underwhelming managerial appointment puts them on the back foot.

Chad Nagel says:
Manchester City
The reigning champions Manchester City could well have a shout as being described as the best club side ever. They blitzed their way to a treble this year and are odds on to win their fourth successive title. Despite losing Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic should be a sound replacement, while Josko Gvardiol will add even more quality to an already-stellar backline. Erling Haaland won the Premier League Golden Boot last term and looks to continue his formidable form of 36 goals and eight assists in 35 Premier League games.

Manchester United
For the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford, Man United are looking like a side seriously capable of challenging for league honours. And while this may be a bold observation, it is not just because of the progress and signings made by Ten Hag since his arrival, but it’s also down to the fact that some of their rivals have lost some crucial, experienced personnel since the conclusion of last season. Over and above that, I feel that the United squad is currently one of the most intact teams in Europe this season (from defence to attack), and their determination to dethrone Pep Guardiola’s Manchester as the top club in their city will prove to be just the motivation they need to go all the way and lift the Premier League trophy, along with a few domestic titles.

Arsenal
The young Arsenal side, under Mikel Arteta, surprised everyone with their brilliant performance last season. The new season is expected to be no different. However, the Gunners need to be careful not to lose momentum at crucial phases and remain focused on the prize. Arsenal recorded their best start to a Premier League season as they secured 50 points from their first 19 matches. They were leading the title race comfortably. However, the Gunners lost the plot in the most crucial phase of the competition which took away their dreams of winning the title after 19 seasons. They finished in second spot with 84 points. Nonetheless, Arsenal have been very busy in the transfer window and added quality players to the roster which brings depth to the squad and now, they certainly have a formidable squad capable of become league winners.

Joshua Gaillard says:
Arsenal
Arsenal have shown a clear progression since the introduction of Mikel Arteta as manager. From the ground right up to ownership everyone gives off a cohesion necessary to challenge for silverware. Finally, every action that is taken, might not be clear to all at first glance, but has proved important for the club’s reformation. The only concern wavering above them is injuries, which arguably cost the Gunners a Premier League trophy last season, but the likely arrival of the Premier League’s chief medical officer, Mark Gillet alongside the introduction of Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, and Declan Rice to add quality depth to the squad shows preparedness for another run at the title.

Manchester City
Manchester City and Arsenal were (by a fair distance) at least head and shoulders above the rest of the Premier League last year – and I can’t see why this won’t be the case again. Arsenal will have the addition of Champions League football, which shouldn’t be underestimated, Manchester United have done positive business, Liverpool have been shrewd, and Chelsea I suppose remains a work in progress…City win the league.

Arsenal
With the stellar performance that they have shown throughout the pre-season games and recently winning the Community Shield over a formidable Manchester City side, the Gunners are undoubted 2023/24 title contenders. While the team boasts talented players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odergaard and Thomas Partey to name a few, they have also strengthened their squad by making significant signings, including the likes of Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz amongst others. This sure makes the London-based side the team to look out for in the title race.
