England: Second ODI

Ben Stokes’ announcement of his retirement from ODI cricket ahead of the opening match of the series probably wasn’t the ideal preparation for the side but his performance in the match itself won’t go down as his finest moment in the format.

While their Test side now appears to have a clear identity, the ODI side doesn’t give off the impression that it has the same clarity.

Still they are a side loaded with star quality and they are more than capable of getting wins in the format.

It does appear that ODI cricket has ironically become the weakest format for a team that are world champions in the fifty-over game.

South Africa: Second ODI

Rassie van der Dussen continues to prove that he is the rock in the Proteas middle order but there are now a few major contributors and dangermen.

Aiden Markram took key wickets with his improving off-spin which should punch his ticket to the 2023 World Cup.

Dwaine Pretorius earned a cap as a concussion substitute last time out after a rare head injury in the field was sustained by Andile Phehlukwayo in a nasty collision.

The Proteas bowling attack looks in deadly form with Lungi Ngidi getting back up to pace while Anrich Nortje looks as good as ever at making something out of nothing.

Verdict: Second ODI
