PREVIEW: 3rd ODI – England v New Zealand

England showed resilience to win a low-scoring dogfight last time out after losing the free-slowing opener.

The pitch at the Oval will play a big part in shaping the direction of the match. The venue has hosted just two ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.

England vs New Zealand | Third ODI | Wednesday 13 September 2023 | The Oval, London

England 1/2 | New Zealand 8/5

England were soundly beaten by India when they last played an ODI at the Oval having lost the toss and been stuck in.

There aren’t too many instances of a total smaller than 250 being successfully defended at the Oval but England have pulled off a few.

England’s strong swing bowling contingent would love to get the ball in their hands early but New Zealand should have the same ambition.

Surviving the early innings period when batting first will be key for both sides who has shown inconsistent top order form.

A batting collapse prevented New Zealand from cashing in on a great start to the series.

That start had been powered by big innings from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell, who are featured stars of this Black Caps team and players expected to have a big World Cup.

New Zealand appear more keen on getting game-time for their key players than achieving results but would still like to turn things around and retake the series lead in Surrey.

Trent Boult didn’t miss a beat in his return and showed that he can still put any batting side on its heels.

Verdict: England

At this venue England should hold a slight edge.
