Last year’s defeated Wimbledon men’s finalist Nick Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from this year’s event due to a wrist injury.
The fiery Australian has been plagued with injury since he lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final and has only played one tournament this year because of a knee injury that needed surgery.
As he was making his return, he injured his wrist and has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon. Announcing his withdrawal on Instagram he said: “I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year.
“I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again.
“During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca.
“As a precaution I had it scanned, and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.
“I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.
“I’ll be back and, as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans.”
Wimbledon starts on Monday. Kyrgios, who was seeded 30th for the tournament was due to face Belgian David Goffin in the first round of the men’s draw while he and doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinaki were drawn against Britain’s Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram in the doubles.
Responding to the Australian’s withdrawal the tournament organizers Tweeted: “Sorry to hear your news, Nick Kyrgios. Wishing you a swift recovery and hope to see you back on our courts next year.”
