PREVIEW: Spin to play key role in Bloem as Proteas face England in first ODI

South Africa begin their brief series against England with many of the tourists already in the country. It sets an odd tone that all but four of the visiting team’s players have been competing in the SA20.

South Africa vs England | First ODI | Friday 27 January 2023 | Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein | 17:00

To Win Match
South Africa 23/10 | England 16/10

Batting will be the primary concern for the Proteas and they should have few excuses if the Mangaung Oval’s pitch lives up to its reputation.

Through their recent batting struggles, Janneman Malan has largely been insulated given that he only really plays ODI cricket regularly.

The Proteas also get a timely boost in the form of the return to fitness of Rassie van der Dussen.

On the Bloem wicket Aiden Markram could prove tough to get away but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Proteas still field both Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj alongside the quicks.

The World Champions prepare for their defence in earnest here, and while Blomefontein isn’t quite Hyderabad, the conditions should be similar to ICC tournament conditions in India.

They are helped by having a whole gang of players playing SA20 at the moment with that tournament on break for this international engagement.

Phil Salt and skipper Jos Buttler are among those showing themselves t be in good form.

England have sent a squad that is an intriguing mix of players but one that also demonstrates the depth of their white-ball talent.

Verdict: England 16/10

England have too much firepower for the Proteas.
